That’s right; the schism is already here. If the Pope thinks “cafeteria Catholics” will sustain the Church, he is in denial. I’m shocked at how sharply Mass attendance has dropped even in the last ten years.
I can believe it played out exactly as you’ve described; the deviants actually assume the wholesale collapse of the WASP culture engineered in the past few years by the Bolsheviks in the US will be mirrored in the Catholic Church. Even with this Pope, they couldn’t be more wrong; he is smart enough to know when you try to accommodate the crazies you end up with nobody happy (and in the Church in my area, nobody left). Masses of Catholic immigrants with outstretched palms will not provide the standard of living the American clergy & religious have come to expect, so they either toe the line or pass into irrelevance.
When the communists and anarchists in Spain demanded the leftist government arm them against the military coup in 1936, the government did so only as a last resort; they knew they could never control them (or appease them) once they were armed. A year later the communists were massacring the anarchists, and while the area controlled by the leftists steadily shrank as the war dragged on for two more years the heart of the rank-and-file was no longer in it - the outcome was a foregone conclusion in the spring of 1937.
She could give the Pope a statue of Jesus crucified on a rainbow. He might like it, put it next to his hammer and sickle crucifix.
