“It is preferable that every service, even in the Church, come to an end,” says pope

Vatican City (AsiaNews) – Today Pope Francis spoke in St Peter’s Square before some 30,000 members of the Renewal in the Holy Spirit Movement. Those present included Card Leonardo Sandri, prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Church; Card Kurt Koch, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity; Card Angelo Bagnasco, president of the Italian Bishops’ Conference; several Eastern Orthodox patriarchs, as well as Anglican and Lutheran bishops and Pentecostal pastors.

In his address, the pontiff said, “It is preferable that every service, even in the Church, come to an end. There should be no lifelong leader. This happens in some countries ruled by a dictatorship. [. . .] The only irreplaceable thing in the Church is the Holy Spirit and Jesus is the one Lord."

The event included music by various artists, including Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli and Israeli singer Noa. A letter was read on the ‘Ways of Unity and of Peace: Voices of Prayer for the Martyrs of Today and for a Spiritual Ecumenism,’ a theme the saw the pontiff insist on Christian unity, which has been undermined by divisions among Christians.

Francis also prayed for unity. "Jesus promised us the Holy Spirit. He shall guide us towards unity. He is the one who has the charisma to make a difference in the Church. He also unites."

"Send us the Holy Spirit so that it can teach us all that Jesus has taught us,” Francis said. “Let it remind us of what Jesus said. Jesus, for all of us you asked the Lord the grace of unity in this Church of yours, not ours. History has divided us. Let Jesus help us take the road of unity or reconciled diversity. Lord, you always do what you promised. Give unity to all Christians. Amen!"

The pope returned to one of his main issues, namely the "ecumenism of blood", noting that "the enemy" does not ask whether one is Catholic, Orthodox or evangelical, but kills that person because he or she is a Christian. "If the enemy unites us in death who are we not to be united in life."

Speaking about the Copts killed in Libya, he noted, "Egyptian Copts were not Catholic; they were Christian, and are our martyrs because they gave their life for Christ."

In his mostly unprepared address, the pope also warned against the temptation of power, which “leads to vanity, [and] a sense that one can do anything.” This is all the devil’s work. “The devil comes in through the wallet, which is his front door.”

"How many leaders turn into peacocks? [. . .] Although I prefer the term servant, every leader believes him or herself indispensable. Yet, it is the devil who tempts them, who leads them to believe that they are indispensable in whatever task they undertake." It is devil who "leads them to want to be in command, to be in the middle. Step by step, one slips into authoritarianism, [and] favouritism."

"Secular leaders must spiritually and materially foster those who come after [them]. It is preferable that every service, even in the Church, come to an end [at some point]. There should be no lifelong leader. This happens in some countries ruled by a dictatorship. This is the devil’s temptation. He turns servants into masters. Such temptation leads to vanity."

Finally, the pope called on the members of the Renewal of the Holy Spirit movement "to undertake initiatives that create bonds of trust and cooperation with the bishops who have pastoral responsibility to guide the Spirit. Undertake initiatives so that all currents can come together in ties of cooperation with their bishops wherever they are. You Charismatics have the special grace to work for Christian unity."

HELLO, DEAREST, AWESOME YOU!

Yes, a good age to retire, particularly for a “shepard to be put out to pasture.”

Look for Pope Francis to retire by the time he is 80.

May his reign be short.

Yeah - how can you support heresy like his statement, "The only irreplaceable thing in the Church is the Holy Spirit and Jesus is the one Lord."???

Pentecostal pastors were present? In a pig’s eye.

Why would that be inconsistent? Pope Francis meets US televangelists, and the first-ever ‘papal high-five’ follows

Compromise on the part of the evangelicals.

"...Finally, the pope called on the members of the Renewal of the Holy Spirit movement "to undertake initiatives that create bonds of trust and cooperation with the bishops who have pastoral responsibility to guide the Spirit."

FWIW, the movement is named "Renewal in the Holy Spirit", not "Renewal of the Holy Spirit". The later implies man renews God, whereas the former recognizes God renews man.

This is an obvious distinction, but it appears the more blasphemous interpretation, placing man above God is reiterated in the next sentence, wherein bishops are said to have responsibility to guide God, rather than remaining obedient to God through faith in Christ.

The people who are killing Christians do not discriminate.

No prejudice, other than extreme and entire, on their part

A Jehovah's Witness, or Mormon would likely do also. It'd be all the same to them.

Not trying to send any hidden messages here, intended for Bergoglio (as for the song title) but something soothing nonetheless

And the bigger issue is that the manifest heretic is still pushing his pet novelty, "ecumenism of blood".

“The Holy Roman Church firmly believes, professes and preaches that all those who are outside the Catholic Church, not only pagans but also Jews or heretics and schismatics, cannot share in eternal life and will go into the everlasting fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels, unless they are joined to the Church before the end of their lives; that the unity of this ecclesiastical body is of such importance that only for those who abide in it do the Church’s sacraments contribute to salvation and do fasts, almsgiving and other works of piety and practices of the Christian militia produce eternal rewards; and that nobody can be saved, no matter how much he has given away in alms and even if he has shed blood in the name of Christ, unless he has persevered in the bosom and unity of the Catholic Church.” - Pope Eugene IV, Cantate Domino, Ex Cathedra

Not to be confused with Baptism of Blood...something entirely different. With baptism of blood the martyr dies within the Catholic Church of our Lord. With "ecumenism of blood” anyone who was previously baptized and outside the Church is now considered united to the Church, regardless of any heresy or schism which was never recanted. This is clearly condemned by Pope Eugene IV.

Not so fast.....In May 1990 in Mexico City and on...Pope John Paul II met with Worlds Religious leaders and embraced them, just like Francis as "worshipers of the One True God"...... Furthermore he told them he did not come to that meeting to teach them but to learn from them their heritage in which the world should heed. .....Not to mention Pope Paul called Evangelicals "sects" and warned catholics against their errors....

Popes have been doing the same as Francis for decades now....as photos depict...in 1986 and 2011 as examples

...for this inter-religious Papal gathering an African pagan priest sang a prayer to the 'pagan deity of Olokun'....where they are gathered praying before the cript of St. Francis.... in a consecrated area

Seems all of these, with Pope Francis, are the wealthy TV 'celebrity' Pastors and speakers....which many in the Christian community do not see them in a favorable light....rather they are "TV Celebrities" with a veneer of Christianity to sell to the masses.

I read what the pope said, and I read some of the comments here.

In this particular case, I agree with him. Why is the pope catching flak for this comment?

Notice from the Vatican Office of Translation

Before "poor translation" is made the scapegoat of this latest homily by the Pope , we would like to post this important announcement to the faithful worldwide.

DO NOT BLAME US!!! We do not tell our Great Papa what to say. He says it and we try to figure out what it means in Italian, let alone all the languages of the world!

We are not charged with perfection in translation. In fact, none of us speak a second language at all!

This may surprise many readers of this notice, so I will describe our role here at Vatican Central... or VeeCee, as we call it.

First, just months ago, we were all homeless on the Streets of Rome. The translation office is a jobs program for homeless Italians. Through the kindness of the Great leaders at VeeCee, 8 of us were recruited to a very fulfilling job with benefits. Many of us previously used Google Translate, so we had every qualification needed. Please note, our instructions are to get the message out fast. You may have noticed our Great Pope speaks "off the cuff" quite frequently, or as we say here in VeeCee, "between bites of pasta."

For this reason, we are not charged with accuracy, but with speed. Blinding speed. And between you and me, we are fast. We don't like to miss meals. Done is done. Good enough, is good enough.

With this in mind, please try to speak kindly of us so that we can continue in this important role.

Sincerely,
Luigi, Antonio, Giuseppe, Michael, Maria, Giovanna, Francesco, & Concetta

October 27, 1986, with due permission of John Paul II, the Dalai Lama and Tibetan Buddhist monks of his sect placed a small statue of Buddha over the tabernacle of St. Peter Church in Assisi... The statue was encased in a glass cylinder

In front of the tabernacle, below, first row, was a censer in the shape of a lotus flower and to its left, a small banner with Buddhist inscriptions. Two pagan religious books were placed on either side of the tabernacle along with candles that burned in honor of the idol.

Buddhist monks adored the idol, and prayed that all "may soon attain the state of Buddha"...this done in St. Peter's Catholic Church no less.

Here we have the 'Bishop of Fatima' receiving a shawl laden with verses of pagan mythology.

I came up LCMS so missed the ‘extras’...

I was brought up in the LCMS as well. My father was a paster, so I was a dangerous PK.

I had a SHORT stay in an ELCA church following a ruckus with the LCMS clergy. That is how I learned first hand that the ELCA works deeply inside the darkside.

For once, the Pope said some things that I can agree with, if the words are an accurate translation. I agree 100% that if Islamofascists murder a Christian in defiance of the Holy Name of Jesus, whether the murdered person is Catholic or other Christian, then that person will be united with Jesus in heaven.
