Definition of Sola Scriptura

Sola Scriptura: the reformed Protestant belief that the Scriptures alone are the final and only infallible authority for the Christian. This does not mean that Scriptures are the only authority (nuda or solo Scriptura), as Protestants believe in the authority of tradition, reason, experience, and emotions to varying degrees (after all, “sola scriptura” itself is an authoritative tradition in Protestantism). It does mean that Scripture trumps all other authorities (it is the norma normans sed non normata Lat. “norm that norms which is not normed”).

Controversy of Sola Scriptura

Sometimes people get the idea that sola Scriptura was a 16th-century invention. While it was definitely articulated a great deal through the controversies during the Reformation, its basic principles can be found deep in church history. Take a look at some of these early church fathers who seemed to believe in the primacy of Scripture:

For just as a man, if he wishes to be skilled in the wisdom of this world, will find himself unable to get at it in any other way than by mastering the dogmas of philosophers, so all of us who wish to practise piety will be unable to learn its practice from any other quarter than the oracles of God. Irenaeus (175)

“They [heretics] gather their views from other sources than the Scriptures. We have learned from none others the plan of our salvation, than from those through whom the Gospel has come down to us, which they did at one time proclaim in public, and, at a later period, by the will of God, handed down to us in the Scriptures, to be the ground and pillar of our faith.

For they [the Apostles] were desirous that these men should be very perfect and blameless in all things, whom also they were leaving behind as their successors, delivering up their own place of government to these men; which men, if they discharged their functions honestly, would be a great boon to the Church, but if they should fall away, the direst calamity. Proofs of the things which are contained in the Scriptures cannot be shown except from the Scriptures themselves.”  (Against Heresies, 1:8:1, 3:1:1, 3:3:1, 3:12:9)

Ambrose (330-397)

Cyprian (248)

For that those things which are written must be done, God witnesses and admonishes, saying to Joshua the son of Nun: ‘The book of this law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate in it day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein.’ Also the Lord, sending His apostles, commands that the nations should be baptized, and taught to observe all things which He commanded. If, therefore, it is either prescribed in the Gospel, or contained in the epistles or Acts of the Apostles, that those who come from any heresy should not be baptized, but only hands laid upon them to repentance, let this divine and holy tradition be observed.” (Letter 73:2)

Cyril of Jerusalem (313-386)

“For concerning the divine and holy mysteries of the Faith, not even a casual statement must be delivered without the Holy Scriptures; nor must we be drawn aside by mere plausibility and artifices of speech. Even to me, who tell thee these things, give not absolute credence, unless thou receive the proof of the things which I announce from the Divine Scriptures. For this salvation which we believe depends not on ingenious reasoning, but on demonstration of the Holy Scriptures.” (Catechetical Lectures, 4:17)

Dionysius of Alexandria (265)

“Nor did we evade objections, but we endeavored as far as possible to hold to and confirm the things which lay before us, and if the reason given satisfied us, we were not ashamed to change our opinions and agree with others; but on the contrary, conscientiously and sincerely, and with hearts laid open before God, we accepted whatever was established by the proofs and teachings of the Holy Scriptures.”  (Cited in Ecclesiastical History, Eusebius, 7:24)

Gregory of Nyssa (335-394)

“We make the Holy Scriptures the rule and the measure of every tenet; we necessarily fix our eyes upon that, and approve that alone which may be made to harmonize with the intention of those writings.

And to those who are expert only in the technical methods of proof a mere demonstration suffices to convince; but as for ourselves, we were agreed that there is something more trustworthy than any of these artificial conclusions, namely, that which the teachings of Holy Scripture point to: and so I deem that it is necessary to inquire, in addition to what has been said, whether this inspired teaching harmonizes with it all. Basil the Great (379)

Enjoying as you do the consolation of the Holy Scriptures, you stand in need neither of my assistance nor of that of anybody else to help you comprehend your duty. You have the all-sufficient counsel and guidance of the Holy Spirit to lead you to what is right (Letter CCLXXXIII, ANCF, p. 312).

Hilary of Poitiers (300-368)

“Their treason involves us in the difficult and dangerous position of having to make a definite pronouncement, beyond the statements of Scripture, upon this grave and abstruse matter….We must proclaim, exactly as we shall find them in the words of Scripture, the majesty and functions of Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and so debar the heretics from robbing these Names of their connotation of Divine character, and compel them by means of these very Names to confine their use of terms to their proper meaning….I would not have you flatter the Son with praises of your own invention; it is well with you if you be satisfied with the written word.”  (On the Trinity, 2:5, 3:23)

Jerome (347-420)

“When, then, anything in my little work seems to you harsh, have regard not to my words, but to the Scripture, whence they are taken.”  (Letter, 48:20)

“I beg of you, my dear brother, to live among these books [Scriptures], to meditate upon them, to know nothing else, to seek nothing else.” (Letter, 53:10)

Theodoret (393-457)

Conclusion

Here is a good quote from J. N. D. Kelly to sum it all up:

The clearest token of the prestige enjoyed by (Scripture) is the fact that almost the entire theological effort of the Fathers, whether their aims were polemical or constructive, was expended upon what amounted to the exposition of the Bible. Further, it was everywhere taken for granted that, for any doctrine to win acceptance, it had first to establish its Scriptural basis (Early Christian Doctrines, San Francisco: Harper & Row, 1978, pp. 42, 46).

Your interpretation of Heb. 12:22-24 doesn’t seem to square with the immediate context, nor the larger context, the entire book of Hebrews. I would say Paul is contrasting two kingdoms, one of this world, based at the earthly mount Zion, i.e., under Sinaitic law Judaism, with a heavenly mount Zion not of this world, as you said quoting Jesus, God’s “kingdom is not of this world.” This is Judaism contrasted with Christianity, in other words.

Paul wouldn’t have meant Christianity here to mean “the RCC denomination and all other denominations and groups, full of gross impurities, fomenting doctrinal divisions, etc.,” as per your comment, as there was no such thing as the RCC or Protestantism at the time he wrote Hebrews. It could hardly have been his subject. The issue was rather, was Judaism and Christianity. Obvious when you look at the subject matter of the book of Hebrews.

The parable of the wheat and tares, I would think deals with Christianity from a much larger perspective than what we see in Heb. 12.

As you can see, Simon was already known as 'Peter'

But, since there WAS no NT at the time Christ spoke to Peter, just what DID Peter and the rest of the Disciples know about ROCKS???

If you go back to the link of our first conversation you will see that I have made a through study of the major religions and read the Bible cover to cover. Perhaps in your study of it you missed: Mat 10:14 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, as ye go forth out of that house or that city, shake off the dust of your feet.

IO could be wrong, but "shake off the dust of your feet." is not synonymous with "Harangue them into submission."

While I may be an agnostic, I know good advice when I hear it.

The parable of wheat and tares is revisited in Revelations, when the Angels are sent forth to first gather the tares and take them for burning, before harvesting the wheat. Since the Bible teaches to some of us that Christians will be Raptrued away before the Great Tribulation, who would you estimate are the wheat of Revelations?

Jesus sent His disciples by two out to prepare the Jews. This was prior to the confrontation with Saul on the Road to Damascus.

If you get interested in the Bible, try using the tools which have proven effective in understanding the Bible scenes. To whom does a passage speak and of whom? For what 'dispensation' is the passage offered to edify? What timing is evident in the passage meaning?

It is evident that you are of better than average intelligence and have the capabilities to study without immediate teaching. Enjoy your journey through Scriptures because the Bible is the only book I know of which guarantees the author will enlighten you to the meaning He intended if you will but ask for His guidance in same.

When you do get deeper into scripture you will find a particular passage which states that Christians are to contend for the Gospel, not merely talk about Jesus. We are even admonished to put on armor for the daily 'contending'. Jesus even went so far as to instruct that there had arrived a time to sell something and buy a sword. When He sent the first wave out to the Jewish homes, he told them to take nothing along for their maintenance, but the second time He sent His disciples forth He gave more explicit and directed instructions.

BYW, that dust was meant to be a witness that the folks in that house had rejected the message sent from The Lord, the Jewish folks in that house. The threshold of the Jewish home had significance beyond merely an entry to the dwelling.

Hmm, got an extraneous “s” on the end of Revelation. Meant to refer tot he book, not the particular passages generically.

A lot of people fail to study far enough to understand that one don’t they. The gathering of the tares is happening AFTER the 1000 year reign of Christ on earth.

Actually, I don't believe you have a grasp of this topic. In fact, I memorized the entire book of Hebrews, word for word, over a period of nine years, and have studied it in both English and Greek over a period of some 25 years.

You need to study what John Baptist and Jesus were preaching about the Kingdom of "The heavens" (only appearing as such) in Matthew, versus the Kingdom of God. When you understand that, you will understand what I said:

THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN AND THE KINGDOM OF THE GOD

The Bible is the most amazing thing I have ever found in Life, and I'm almost 70, with a whole lot of life experiences and studies under my expanding belt.

In a foolish moment of cockiness recently, I was going to challenge the guy playing Chess with pigeons to play a correspondence game of Chess. But I snapped out of it, realizing I have forgotten most of what I had memorized all those decades ago. I would be doing not mush more than pushing pieces around the board.

That's a fact! I'm pushing 70 myself, grew up with strong Bible believing parents and still find new revelations.

Post-tribs, such as myself, in terms of a harvest, see the rapture in Rev. 14:14-16. Relating it to the parable of the wheat and the tares, the harvest of the wheat is in 14-16, the tares in 18-20. In Revelation, the tares are equivalent to those who take the mark of beast, the wheat are faithful Christians.

The mark of the beast serves to gather the tares out of God’s kingdom into the antichrist’s kingdom, the tares are thus gathered to be burnt. Not burnt then, gathered to be burnt. The wheat are then harvested as we see in Rev. 14, followed by the burning of the tares.

Pay attention, Tennessee, cause you ain’t going anywhere. Don’t forget our little discussion here. You’ll have to deal with this in the tribulation, as to whether you’ll take the mark and be tares or not.

In my view, things like the recent SCOTUS decision are already separating people out. To be finalized in the tribulation.

In terms of harvest, as we see in the wheat and tares, I think it would have to be Rev. 14. There’s where you find the harvest theme.
