If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9 NASB).
Jesus came to save us our sins.
"Thou shalt call His name Jesus. For He shall save His people from their sins." (Matthew 1:21)
Jesus can forgive sins because He is God. On earth He forgave the sins of the paralyzed man (Luke 5:18-26), the woman taken in adultery (John 8:1-11), the sinful woman (Luke 7:39-50) and the good thief (Luke 23:39-43).
Jesus gave the apostles the power to forgive sins.
"Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained." (John 20:23)
Confession is the way Jesus wants sin to be forgiven here on earth. Otherwise, He would not have given His apostles the power to forgive sins in His name.

And on the cross He made provision for the forgiveness of ALL sins for those who believe in Him.

Confession is the way Jesus wants sin to be forgiven here on earth. Show us the place where Jesus taught us to go to confession to a Catholic priest. It would be interesting to see HIS prescribed method for doing this.
