Re: the brown scapular. If we can believe Wikopedia, it says not that much difference between a talisman and an amulet:

A talisman is an object which is believed to contain certain magical or sacramental properties... Amulets and talismans are often considered interchangeable despite their differences.

In general, an amulet is created by a sorcerer for a special purpose. A Talisman supposedly has great powers.
