Actually, the image is a 3-D replica that was burned into the shroud when Christ rose - not a painting - ala a micro Big Bang burst of energy. It actually is not truly 3D, it is however a database of 3D data in a 2D representation, a terrain map in which 3D data is encoded in the image by distance being inversely proportional to the intensity of the image. i.e., the closer the cloth, the darker the image.
