Brethren, Peace be with you.
Ironically - or perhaps Providentially - I wrote my best academic paper ever during my years as an Eastern Orthodox Christian. You can still see that a very Scholastic mind stood behind the paper, perhaps a portent of my later return to the Catholic Church.
The paper is titled Holy Tradition vs. Sola Scriptura: The Witness of the Liturgy. Frank Schaeffer published it on his Christian Activist Number 10 back in the 1990s. Fortunately, the good people at PEMPTOUSIA saved the paper from Schaeffer's unfortunate shipwreck and preserved the paper at their website. I hope you access it and enjoy it. Feel free to leave me your comments here, I want to read them.

I am constrained by the facts. They are stubborn things, whether they favor me or not in the end. :-|
Back then The Christian Activist was an Orthodox publication with great contents. Shaeffer even wrote a great book about his conversion back then.
Too bad he ended like Tertullian.

I’m still working through it... but it’s a good read!
(Speaking as one who’s languishing among American Catholic [uppercase “C” sometimes questionable, depending on the parish], neo-1960’s dreck in place of fulsome liturgy, may I say that—I hope in the non-sinful sense—I envy the Orthodox their tenacious preservation of their liturgy?)

I appreciate your input!
Despite the problems - and scandals - we all know about, I’m convinced the Catholic Church has done a pretty good job of preserving what Dom Gregory Dix called “the shape of the Liturgy” and, may I add, its form.
I rest easy in the Lord, despite the shortcomings of others and of myself, to render Him the worship He deserves.

:) I’d gently add a plug, here, for dear Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and “Summorum Pontificum”...

I really hate to see what Frank Schaeffer has become. In the late 80's I read his dad's book The Great Evangelical Disaster in which he warned the evangelical world of the perilous path many were on when they doubted the infallible, inerrant, and authoritative Word of God.

When they do that they become Catholics and Orthodox.

Like I’ve said. I’m not bragging, it’s just a fact, not a brag.
This happened in the 1990s, when Schaeffer was Orthodox. Not recently.

I fail to see how his current attitude differs from that of any Orthodox chrstian. He hates "rednecks," opposes political conservatism, and thinks that anyone who believes the "fairy tales" in Genesis actually happened are stupid and alienated from 2000 years of history.

It’s been almost 20 years since I wrote and was published in _The Christian Activist_. I recall it as being a good, challenging publication, but that’s about all I remember. I also recall the book Schaeffer wrote describing his conversion and I remember it as a good read, but don’t ask me to quote anything from it. And I don’t have any more.
Eastern Orthodox people are a varied lot. I hesitate to generalize notions about them based solely on their liberals within them.

I enjoyed the essay and thank you for making available to read.
To your witness, I say AMEN!
I also rest easy and joyously in the Lord, knowing that where I am weak, He is strong and makes perfect my own feeble attempt to worship Him as He deserves.
