There is no reason for Christ to Give Peter his new name and then use the SAME term to refer to himself, in a sentence structure that makes NO SENSE in ANY language.
“And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it”
On the other hand, wouldn’t Christ have said something like “and upon you I will build my church”?
Jesus had given Simon the name Cephas (Peter) when they first met.
John 1:40-42 (ASV)
