“... the nature of Purgatory is an admitted area of unsettled knowledge in the Catholic Church ..”

The Greek Orthodox church doesn’t have that doctrine (neither do protestants); so it’s indeed something that is ‘unsettled’ and may be dropped one day by the Roman Catholic Church.

Purgatory denies the efficacy of the cross of Christ. Jesus did not say "It is finished, almost".

It looks like Sungenis is referring to the nature of it, not the existence of it.

Purgatory does not deny true efficacy of the cross. Your comment begs the question, what did Christ means by “it is finished” ? His mission,of course, which is the salvation of the world. But the world continues, and the work of the devil continues. For which the minions of the devil reproach us, by pointing out the ways we fall short but also that Christ has not come again. Yet we die, one by one, and it is only by dying that we see the course of our life, and how many of us see a perfect trust in Him?

There is no mention of any "Purgatory" in the fathers.

Not the word purgatory per se, but certainly a description of a purgatorial fire. Here are the words of St Augustine (I'm sure there are others):

"That there should be some fire even after this life is not incredible, and it can be inquired into and either be discovered or left hidden whether some of the faithful may be saved, some more slowly and some more quickly in the greater or lesser degree in which they loved the good things that perish, through a certain purgatorial fire" (Handbook on Faith, Hope, and Charity 18:69 [A.D. 421]).

Notice as well that Thomas Aquinas concedes that Scripture does not tell us about the "situation" (that is, the place where it is sited - it's location) of Purgatory. Thus, he's not willing to be dogmatic about it. However, Thomas Aquinas does believe that there were "revelations made to many" about Purgatory.

No scripture but private revelations revealing purgatory...

On the contrary, Gregory says [The quotation is from St. Augustine (De Civ. Dei i, 8)]: "Even as in the same fire gold glistens and straw smokes, so in the same fire the sinner burns and the elect is cleansed."

Show us ANYWHERE in the scriptures where Christians get burned...It's not there...It's a fable...

Indulgences (which comes from the Latin for a debt repayment) are a way for the person to pay that debt in their earthly life.

Rom 4:4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
Rom 4:5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

Rom 4:6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
Rom 4:7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
Rom 4:8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.

There is no debt to pay for...And by putting yourself in debt to God, you have rejected his grace...

What ought to be interesting to Catholics is that the sale of inlgances to get people out of purgatory and the idea of purgatory were created at the same time...

It’s a fact that Christians sin, Paul said so. Paul also said that to be absent from the body is to be with Christ. There is no mention of an intermediate stop for ‘cleansing’. We owe nothing for those sins be cause Christ paid the debt in full for past, present, and future sins. The concept of purgatory denies to fullness of God’s forgiveness.

I can give verses, but I'm guessing you'll have your own protestant interpretation of why those verses are somehow wrong. I've been down this Bible back and forth road with posters like yourself before and I am not interested in dabbling in your protestant heretical views.

I didn't post here to convince protestants of Catholic Truth. I posted to point out the error in the article when it stated that Purgatory was not taught by the early fathers.

That concept of purgatory is rooted in doing "works" to obtain Heaven...

Either the Blood of Christ cleanses us from our sin or it doesn't...

It's really that simple...

Believing in or not the idea of Purgatory has no relationship to one's ultimate salvation...

But it does put a huge burden on the "believers" to "work" for their place in heaven which is a free gift...

“... Scripture does not speak of Purgatory...”

For my fellow Catholics - this statement is false so don’t pay any attention to the article. (Matthew 7:15)

Scripture proof texts for purgatory: (for Catholics)

2 Maccabees 12:39-42; 44-45
This is not found in Luther’s bible since he used the Palestinian canon used by the apostate Jews who never became Christian after the destruction of Jerusalem (post temple Jerusalem = whore of Babylon because those Jews had destroyed Jesus). The Alexandrian canon used by Jesus (and Catholics) contains Maccabees.

Also 1 Peter 3:19, 20 This prison is where Christ went after his death to preach to the spirits who were not yet in heaven, but not damned either (the Patriarchs). St. Augustine’s 99th epistle corroborates this (correct) interpretation, as proof that the Church has always recognized the third place, not heaven, not hell; it is not new or unsettled.

There are others, but this enough for my fellow Catholics to remain steadfast in the midst of the untruths bandied about in this post.

Jesus descended into hades and set those captives free. Prior to Christ's death no one could have gone to heaven. The perfect sacrifice had not yet been made. Jesus lead those captives out of there and it is no more for believers.

The teaching of the Catholic purgatory is a lie.

...Catholic Truth...point out error...early (Catholic church) fathers...

It's like you speak in another esoteric religious language, proving yourselves always right but only to yourselves and your flocks. Born-of-the-Spirit Christians can see what you refuse to see...and do indeed accept what is true without prejudice.

Purgatory is only one of many Roman Catholic teachings that cannot be verified by the Word of God or Jesus' apostles' writings.

It's one of many weak foundation pebbles (arrogantly added) in the RCC belief system that will not stand when confronted by Lord Jesus Christ or His Church which He alone founded.
