>>No, he said, Catholics don't have to "be like rabbits" and have more children than is safe or responsible. <<
>>Francis said he would have loved to have entered the U.S. via the Mexican border, saying it would have been a "beautiful thing, as a sign of brotherhood and of help to the immigrants."<<

Just a guess but going by what has happened so far this one is going to be making a lot of dubious history. Roman Catholics have my sympathy.
So once again his talking off the cuff makes him again the darling of leftists. Just a couple of days after he said some nice words about real marriage, that was by the way totally ignored by the media, this is the way his latest incoherent ramblings are being spinned by his adoring leftist fans.
“A non-endorsement endorsement of birth control from the pope: We don’t have to breed like rabbits”.

Incoherent ramblings or a deliberate strategy? He preserves the appearance of orthodoxy by reiterating certain Church teachings in prepared speeches, while promoting his unorthodox opinions directly to the media. The advice he gave to employees at TV2000: "speak directly, speak frankly and freely". Unscripted remarks have become his trademark. If he were unhappy with the results, he would change his approach.
From "The Pope Francis met with the managers and workers of TV2000" http://www.pccs.va/index.php/en/documents/magistere-du-pape-sur-la-communication/item/2760-the-pope-francis-met-with-the-managers-and-workers-of-tv2000
"...The first thing that is beneficial to communication is parrhesia, or rather the courage to speak directly, to speak frankly and freely.
If, instead, we are worried about tactical aspects, our words become artificial, and we communicate nothing. Freedom also means freedom from fashions, clichés, pre-packaged formulas.
We must reawaken words. But every word has a spark of fire and life within. Reawaken that spark, so that it comes out. So this is the first task of the communicator: to reawaken the word..."
Early on I had high hopes for the new Pope. Now I realize he is just another liberal flake. May God save the Catholic Church.
Maybe he was just reiterating the teaching that people should get married before having kids. Rabbits don't get married, so don't behave like rabbits.
I'm not a lagomorphologist so I don't know if rabbits are monogamous, but long-term pairs seem to be the minority option among mammals so I would doubt it. Another reason not to imitate rabbits.
