OXFORD, England (CNS) German church leaders have criticized an anti-Islamic movement that staged mass demonstrations in Dresden and other cities, but they also urged a better understanding of public fears.
This movement looks set to grow and the Catholic Church totally distances itself from it, said Michael Baudisch, spokesman for the Dresden Diocese.
But we also have to speak to those involved, many of whom nurse frustrations about the political process and their lack of life chances. Far from just branding them extremists, our bishops think we must consider their opinions and aims.
Jan. 12 rallies by Patriotic Europeans Against Islamicization of the West, known by its German acronym as Pegida, were attended by 25,000 people in Dresden and thousands more in other cities. However, rival marches across the country the same day also drew tens of thousands in various cities.
Baudisch told Catholic News Service Jan. 14 that Muslims made up only 2 percent of the population of Dresden and surrounding state of Saxony, compared to a much larger Muslim presence in Berlin, Mannheim and other regions.
However, he added that protesters had flooded to Dresden from other parts of Germany to find a place where they can feel strong with those who think and feel the same.
Fear of Islamicization, however exaggerated, is being used as a banner for many frustrations, from disenchantment with political parties to dislike of the European Union, Baudisch told CNS. The churchs leaders believe we must talk to people and see which problems can be discussed and which merely reflect anti-democratic prejudices.

Well this Catholic is using her God-giving COMMON SENSE and I know that position is a clunker. I would rather go with what those Catholic saints who were around when Islam was first was around. They saw it for what it is.
Waiting on the catholic church to apologize for the killings of all non-catholics during the Middle Ages.
Until then....the pope and catholicism has very, very little room to talk on this issue.

defconw, sounds like catholicism has its own personal interpretations as well. until catholicism is in 100% accord on everything, and I mean everything, you have no room to lecture anyone else.
I agree with biggirl though.
Is it the baggage from Germany’s previous embrace of Nazism which leads them to promote “tolerance” at any cost?
**
Probably.
The Pope’s opnion is never going to be 100% agreed upon. But at least we have a leader.
It doesn't matter....catholics have to be 100% subject to the pope. You have ZERO say in the mater. And don't say you don't have to be subject to the pope because there are too many quotes from the pope saying you have to be.
Christians have a leader....His name is Jesus. Unlike the pope, He's never, ever wrong on any issue.
As a Roman Catholic of many, many years, I have never heard any priest criticize any Protestant religion. Respect for other Christian religions and for Judaism is preached occasionally, though.
Perhaps, thinking is different in your denomination, “American Catholicism”.
Baudisch is blind.
That is what we do in my LCMS church as part of the New Years service (and Easter vigil).
Every Good Friday, there is a list of petitions that are offered during the very simple prayer service, since there is no mass or liturgy and it includes prayers for those who believe in God but not in Jesus. Though not mentioned in name, most likely it is for the Muslims.
“Is it the baggage from Germany’s previous embrace of Nazism which leads them to promote “tolerance” at any cost?”
“Love the muslims, hate the protestants (the priest had a nice anti protestant sermon on Christmas eve, followed by how much he respected the mosque across the street).”
I am Catholic, and this sounds crazy. I have not ever heard a sermon in my church which could be called ‘anti-Protestant’ - unless it would be a call for people to return to the Catholic Church.
I do think that the entire Western world is bending over backwards to not offend Muslims - or say anything bad about Islam. They are in a state of denial about the dangers we face.
So it's ok for Catholics to not believe parts of the Catechism?
Honestly can't say I've ever heard an "anti protestant" sermon, whether on Christmas eve or any other day.
Only in areas where his authority is lawful. If the Pope tried to tell me to buy a red Ford instead of a yellow Chevy, he's out-of-bounds. Similarly, if he starts telling me what to believe about a scientific question that has no bearing on the truths of the faith, he's also out-of-bounds. The same is true of any other authority; a President who tries to tell me what to believe about religion is outside his lawful authority.

"Furthermore, in this one Church of Christ no man can be or remain who does not accept, recognize and obey the authority and supremacy of Peter and his legitimate successors." (Pope Pius XI, Encyclical, Mortalium animos, January 6, 1928, The Papal Encyclicals, Claudia Carlen, I.H.M., McGrath Publishing Co., 1981, pp. 317, 318).
PPXI didn't leave much room for negotiation there.
You know, if sure helps if you follow the thread on this. This reply about being 100% subject to the pope dealt with the CCC's statement on catholics and islam. Biggirl took exception to this. She noted would basically do her own thing.
This is what she didn't agree with.
The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankinds judge on the last day. ccc841
As this is a matter of faith, biggirl and all catholics have to subject to the pope/church on this. No deviations allowed. Ya'll are the Borg on these matters.
It was really bizarre. As in I had to look to my bride and make sure I hadn’t drank from the wrong egg nog.
