Freedom of speech is a great thing. Unfortunately, it comes at an unavoidable price: When citizens are free to say what they want, theyll sometimes use that freedom to say some pretty silly things. And thats the case with the 12 claims were about to cover.
Some of them are made over and over, others are rare. Either way, while the proponents of these errors are free to promote them, we as Catholics have a duty to respond.
2. "Christianity is no better than any other faith. All religions lead to God."
If you haven't heard this one a dozen times, you don't get out much. Sadly enough, the person making this claim is often himself a Christian (at least, in name).
The problems with this view are pretty straightforward. Christianity makes a series of claims about God and man: That Jesus of Nazareth was God Himself, and that he died and was resurrected all so that we might be free from our sins. Every other religion in the world denies each of these points. So, if Christianity is correct, then it speaks a vital truth to the world a truth that all other religions reject.
This alone makes Christianity unique.
But it doesn't end there. Recall Jesus' statement in John's Gospel:
"I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me." In Christianity, we have God's full revelation to humanity. It's true that all religions contain some measure of truth the amount varying with the religion. Nevertheless, if we earnestly want to follow and worship God, shouldn't we do it in the way He prescribed?
If Jesus is indeed God, then only Christianity contains the fullness of this truth.
I hear what you’re saying and I do understand your point. But you’re actually wrong about the Catholic Church not having anything to “back up”our beliefs. Everything the Church believes is supported by either Scripture or Catholic Tradition. Protestants reject the inclusion of Catholic Tradition, of course, which is their prerogative.
You should know, however, that Atheists make a similar arguments against all religion. They, too, say there’s “nothing to back it up” because they choose not to believe in the Bible or Catholic Tradition. But again, that’s their choice.
As well as being counter-productive to a civil discussion.
Oh???
Boring? Defend your beliefs or this kitchen may not be the best match for you.
Go to catholic caucus threads and see just how few of y’all are interested. This is a discussion site and that means anyone can post on any thread.
Only one religion leads to God and that is the Catholic religion; all others are absolutely falseincluding every other Christian religion.
A fellow Catholic has actual data on this: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/religion/3237145/replies?c=5137
LOL.
Your question/statement is two fold. You make a statement about speaking to the dead then ask where people’s souls go when they leave this earth. Where people’s souls go when they leave this earth can be debated. Communication between those who have left this earth and those still here is forbidden is scripture. People can debate about where the soul goes upon death but neither is going to be conclusively proven by scripture.
Outreach should not mean one has to compromise the truth to win converts. The history of the Church, in fact, establish the very proof of that statement. For the 400 years preceding Vatican II the Catholic Church professed the true faith, and did so unflinchingly. There was never even the slightest thought of compromise by any of the earlier holy popes. As a result, in 1960 the Church was at its highwater mark in terms of every reasonable measure.
After Vatican II, which did all that “outreach” that Protestants and modernist Catholics like so much, and the wheels have all but fallen off the Church. Every measure that can be looked at to judge the success of a religion, membership, vocations, conversions, you name it, are in a tailspin.
So no, as a traditional Catholic I do not turn to Protestants or pay any attention to them as far as listening to advice in how to improve the catholic Church Catholic.
So yes, it actually is a great outreach plan. The truth always is.
I love to read and since I have been sick so much, I do a lot of it. I was on a site and can not find it now. It was about the bones of Mary, Martha and Lazarus being found in burial boxes in Jerusalem. The boxes had each name on one along with the name of Jesus. It said that was very common back then to add Jesus to signify Christians. If I find it again, will post the addy. It was very interesting.
Galatians 1:8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God's curse!
We know that the assumption of Mary is not taught in scripture. Please show from your Catholic Church "tradition" that the apostles taught the assumption of Mary. Keep in mind that if the apostles didn't teach it then those who do are accursed of God.
(Sorry, I forgot to end the italics!)
The Islamic God is nothing more than a ficticious entity from the imagination of the founder of Islam and perpetuated by the religious leaders for centuries....there is no correlation whatsoever between Islam and Christianity, which are diametrically opposed in every way.
Therefore for the Popes to acknowledge Islam’s false believe they have denied the one true God of the Bible.
Joshua 24:15, says it very clearly.....
.... “There is NO middle ground. You are either on the Lord’s side or not. You can’t eat at the Devil’s table and the Lord’s at the same time... “Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils” (1st Corinthians 10:21).
Joshua preached the same as Moses that man must make a decision to serve God or something else...
(Joshua 24:14-24:16 Joshua 24:1-24:30 Joshua 24:1-24:29)
Moses forced the people to choose whose side they were on... “Who is on the LORD’s side? let him come unto me” (Exodus 32:26).
And your credentials for deciding who is and isn't a Christian are ... non-existent.
Never said it was "my" belief. You asked for clarification on the author's preferred use of the term "christianity" rather than "Catholic". I provided you with a response along with two examples of how the Holy Spirit works over time to open minds and hearts. I will add you to my daily prayer list.
For about the fiftieth time, the "first place" language is from a document which has already considered:
Try reading in context sometime.
You "know" something that I don't acknowledge, then. Revelation chapter 12. Remember: I have just as much right to interpret Scripture for myself as you do.
Yes I read the post you referred to, and Mrs Don-o is almost always spot with her authority. You seem to have questioned the “exception” she cites in section 847, but if you read that you would see it is really only speaking to someone who, through no fault of their own, does not know of the Church.
Of course, this is a Catholic teaching. If protestants want to reject it they are free to do so. But to reject it without first examining what the Church is teaching and why a Catholic would make this statement, may not be that prudent. There are many places a non-Catholic can go to learn all that one needs to know about the Church to determine in their own mind if it actually is the only religion that will lead them to salvation.
But please understand that I am not saying that only Catholics will be saved. What I am saying is that while non-Catholics may very well reach salvation, they will be saved in spite of their false religion, and not because of that religion.
Thank you for your answer. What is that debate over? When it is debated, what are the possibilities? Again, I am asking a serious, honest question.
