Pope Francis continues his groundbreaking progressive approach to Catholicism with plans to expand next year on one of his favorite causes: climate change and protecting the environment. The pope is expected to make climate change a large part of his leadership efforts throughout 2015, according to ThinkProgress.org, using the papacy to encourage the 1.2 billion Catholics to protect the environment as “God’s creation.”
Pope Francis has even gone as far as to call the destruction of the rainforest a sin, and cautioned Catholics and non-Catholics alike that protecting the environment is a sacred matter, going as far as back as his inaugural mass in 2013.
“The vocation of being a ‘protector,’ however, is not just something involving us Christians alone; it also has a prior dimension which is simply human, involving everyone. It means protecting all creation, the beauty of the created world, as the Book of Genesis tells us and as Saint Francis of Assisi showed us. It means respecting each of God’s creatures and respecting the environment in which we live.”
Under Pope Francis’ leadership in 2014, the Catholic Church held a five-day summit with scientists and experts on the environment, and the Pope already has plans in place to address the New York general assembly next September regarding climate change and general environmental issues. Pope Francis will also attend The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change global meeting in Paris at the end of 2015.
Taking further action related to the operations of the Catholic Church, the pope will be drafting a formal letter to all Bishops of the Roman Catholic Church, called an encyclical, specifically addressing climate change.
Dan Misleh, director of the Catholic climate covenant, told The Guardian these letters are rare and uses Pope Francis’ highest level of authority in creating the document, expected to be somewhere around 50-60 pages long. But the pope can expect some push-back from other church members as well as evangelical groups and even member of Congress.
“There will always be 5-10 percent of people who will take offense,” Misleh told The Guardian. “They are very vocal and have political clout. This encyclical will threaten some people and bring joy to others. The arguments are around economics and science rather than morality.”
Pope Francis has distinguished himself from previous popes in his progressive views on such topics as evolution, homosexuality, and politics within the Vatican. These views, as well as the pope’s humility and his example of leading a far less lavish lifestyle than previous popes, have made him very popular among non-Catholics as well as members of his own church.
Do you agree with Pope Francis that harming the environment is a “sin?”
Thank you for supplying the joke-—I didn’t have time, but it did strike me as a possible example of a mortal sin involving the environment. I heard it in a homily a few weeks ago (in rural Ontario), and recalled the first time I heard it, two or three decades ago, also in a homily, in rural Oregon.
Fleeing from Christ was the first collegial act of the Catholic heirarcy carried out in communion with the Pope but that didn't keep the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church Jesus Christ Himself founded from spreading the Gospel throughout the world and continuing to teach the fullness of what Christ taught to this very day in spite of the weakness of we mortals, bad apples among the clergy, and the wiles of Satan.
It's only natural for Catholics to sometimes have different views on a given Pope or Bishop and to point out their errors.
But it's only the non-Catholics under the strong delusion of Protestant heresy that each fashions them-self a little false fantasy Christ to suit their Self and Self Alone then fights against anyone who denies their fantasy should be elevated to the same level as what Jesus Christ Himself established.
I’d never heard it; so I had to check it out.
(Drives my wife NUTS when I do this constantly of things I know nothing about!)
Worst place to be; EVER!!
Of ALL the viable fetuses, only about 75% will make it out alive!!
Thanks to serial killers and choosy 'mothers'.
Mary is dead
John 3:15 "That whosoever believeth in him, may not perish; but may have life everlasting."
Who to believe, Jesus Christ, or someone who has a personal fantasy Jesus they insist didn't mean it when He used the word, "everlasting" or was so ignorant He didn't know the meaning of the word "everlasting" ?
He & Gore must have had the same Theology professors.
That is nothing new...except this pope has a socialist agenda... he and Obama what a pair
Who to believe, the writer of ROMANS (which ROME included in the Book), or someone who has a corporate fantasy that they insist didn't mean it when they used the phrase, "...all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God..." or was so ignorant they didn't know the meaning of the word "ALL"?
Attention Slick Willie: if you're reading this; you may want to chime in with "IS" about now...
It's a real shame non-Catholic folks who create their own personal false faith and pretend it's Christianity routinely deny what is clearly stated in Scripture.
Obvious and consistent refusal to believe what Jesus Christ Himself says proves their pretense of basing what they believe on the subset of the Bible they claim to accept is nothing but an attempt to hide the fact that their real basis for what they believe is Sola Yourselfa, not Scripture and since they refuse to accept the words of Jesus Christ Himself, definitely not on following Jesus Christ.
Denying the clear meaning of John 3:15 by pretending they can revise what Christ Himself said to suit their personal fantasies is a perfect example the Self and Self Alone delusion such folks are under.
It's a real shame that ROME has created it's own corporate false faith and pretends that it's Christianity; by routinely deny what is clearly stated in Scripture.
Do you REALLY want to go here?
They are, in effect, denying that Jesus Christ is God because that dethrones their Self and they're dedicated to the strong delusion of Self and Self Alone exactly the same way Eve chose to follow that delusion.
"Who is a liar, but he who denieth that Jesus is the Christ? This is Antichrist, who denieth the Father, and the Son."
1 John 2,22
Whether such people call themselves Christian, delude themselves into thinking they're Christian, jump from one false so-called "Christian" cult to the next, or know they're only pretending to be Christian in order to further some anti-Christian agenda doesn't matter. They're not Christians because they deny that Jesus Christ is God when they refuse to believe what He says.
That's why such deluded folks love cults that make them comfortable and are always ready to throw portions of His Holy Word into the garbage can and/or alter the meaing of words to suit their Self and Self Alone.
have a nice day
I guess you have an issue with protestants or protestantism. I’m not a Catholic, so I don’t need a catholic to set the Pope straight.
What the Catholic church needs right now is for a large percentage of its congregants to leave and follow another leader that is closer to the Bible.
I’ll take another Luther, if that forces not just the Pope but all Protestant church leaders as well who are betraying the Bible for worldly power and control to get back on the right road.
If they are closer to the Bible, then it benefits all.
However, if you’d rather follow a wolf in sheep’s clothing and let that wolf lead millions away from the Bible and under Statist control (which is decidedly anti-religion), then GREAT IDEA!
Me, I want Christians to stay as close to the Bible as possible. I’m not Catholic, but I liked Pope John Paul II because I believe he stayed close to the Bible.
I don’t like this pope and I think he’s a socialist who is perverting the Bible.
So, if for the sake of that massive industry known as Catholicism you’re willing to lead people down the wrong road, great idea!
Global Warming on Free Republic
In before *the pope was mistranslated*.
Sure, throw out some more of the Bible and tell us all how we should stick to the subset you kept. Please, throw Holy Scripture in the garbage can because Luther preferred anti-Christ, anti-Christian, Pharisees to the Apostles and Christ Himself then tell others about leading someone astray?
Talk about a strong delusion, that fits the bill for sure.
