Not a shock: megachurch celebrity tv star preacher Joel Osteen doesn’t know the Bible, reports the clever and energetic Tristyn Bloom of The Daily Caller. (The story’s several weeks old but I just saw it so pass it on for those of you who hadn’t.)
In a Monday post to his verified Facebook page, Joel Osteen ministries, read: God said in Numbers 11:23, Moses, is there any limit to My power? He was saying, Moses, you saw Me part the Red Sea, stop the sun for Joshua, keep three Hebrew teenagers safe in a fiery furnace, dont you realize that I can bring water without rain? Theres no limit to Gods power.
As of Friday afternoon, the post had over 317,000 likes and 52,000 shares.
One normally hesitates to criticize ministers from another tradition, but Joel Osteen perverts Christianity in a way that will keep people from Christ. He preaches a Christianity without a cross. As one commenter put it:
Joel Osteen is a motivational speaker who pretends to be Christian in order to make money. He and his wife live in a multimillion dollar mansion, and in return sell a gospel of false promises, bad theology, and gross consumerism. It is unsurprising that he fails to quote Scripture accurately, because adherence to Scripture has never been a priority of his.
What is truly unfortunate about him and his operation is that through their false teaching they mislead millions. I hope and pray for his repentance, before his final judgment and damnation.
I don’t know about “pretends.” I have no idea what Osteen thinks he’s doing. He does not speak as a Christian preacher but as a motivational speaker who exploits Christian language and Christianity’s continuing cultural authority to bring people (and their donations) in. There’s nothing like the message to the rich young ruler in his preaching, no take up your cross, not even a watch with me.
The Christian life is a constant struggle to move closer to Christ, against the flow of our natures. We’re swimming upstream. With God’s help, making progress, but only because He helps us keep pushing against the current. Osteen offers a pleasant ride on a warm spring day down a wide slow-moving river lying on a well-stocked raft. He presents this as if it were grace and not the easy choice of our fallen natures. “God wants you to do what you want to do” is not the Gospel.
regarding Gamecock, CB, and JS.......
You've judged Gamecock as not saved (post 123 and 146), you've judged Jan_Sobieski to be self-righteous and disrespectful to God (post 148), and you've judged CB as refusing to understand the Bible and takes things out of context (post 101).
So why is it OK for you to make those comments about them but I am wrong when I make them about Osteen?
I don't think I'm the hypocrite here.
You do not own this forum. Anything you post on the open forum is fair game for commenting.
You've got a whole slew of people you are demanding to not post to you again.
Perhaps if you feel this way, YOU ought to avoid the RF. It's not for the thin skinned.
Benny went up a couple notches, in my estimation.
Yeah. IMO, it indicates that there may yet still be some hope for him.
But did he say “I’m not a witch”.
Your last sentence says it all. How is that so many are so stupid to follow this guy? He and his fraud wife are like Jim and Tammy Faye all over again. Don’t these idiot bleating little sheep learn anything? The followers of this false teacher are flat out pathetic.
If my preacher in my church failed in that way he would have been voted off of his pulpit.
And yet the Osteenbots make excuses for him.
“He and his fraud wife are like Jim and Tammy Faye all over again. “
Naw that would be Paul and Jan Crouch. That woman has a hair hat so big I’m shocked she does not have massive migraines. Then there is the makeup and nails. She almost makes Tammy Faye look like a beauty queen.
Osteen and his wife, not sure who they remind me of yet, but I wanna say politicians.
Is it incompetence or intentional? Either choice does not bode well for his followers.
Bill with his hand in the cookie jar and Hillary ready to blow her top.
He is ignorant.
Not a big fan of these modern day televangelists Barbie and Ken’s. UNLESS, they donate all their proceeds instead of getting rich.
I don’t care if a pastor of a large church has a comfortable lifestyle. I really don’t I have helped set pastors’ salaries before and the guideline I tried to use is it should reflect the relative income of the church. Average member makes $40K. Pastor should make $40K. $100K? Ditto. It is one of the ways of keeping the congregation from looking down on him as the hired help.
But to live in a $10,000,000 house? Let’s get real.
I call him “The Blinker”. Watch how often he blinks his eyes. Body language experts say that’s a sign that he doesn’t believe what he is saying. I believe he is an atheist. He’s the preacher’s son. But instead of running off and getting into all the vices, he figured out a way to get wealthy.
Yeah, and the freakin’ fraud Osteen claims Obama is a Christian AND that he is doing a good job!!!!! Osteens followers are pathetic little easily fooled sheep....sheep that will continue to shovel their hard earned money at this charlatan. False teachers are brilliant at their craft of separating weak idiots from their money...and it has always been that way.
Yes. We should pray for Obama.
But that doesn’t mean you go out in public and praise him.
So now that the shoe is on the other foot, and you’ all are being judged... you think I am wrong TO JUDGE. Well, thousands of people think you are wrong about Osteen.
I don’t care if you don’t like Osteen, it was opportunity .
I loved seeing how quickly you’ all in the clique are to mistreat anyone, who objects to your slander. So continue on your judging ways, I have better things to do... I said don’t contact me. as I’m too busy to keep checking here.
The arguments went as expected, boringly similar condemnation. People with low self esteem usually have to put down others to make themselves feel better, so If I don’t answer you this time....it isn’t personal.
It was time for you, Gamecock, CB and JS to get a dose of what has been dished out by all of you to many others on this forum regarding religious beliefs, to those who disagree with you.
I lurk and read the comments from time to time.
‘JUDGE NOT LEST THOU ALSO BE JUDGED!’
You are entitled to your opinion about Osteen or anyone else. I decided to take you all to the place where you were judged for a change, just as you all continue to judge others beliefs.
I don’t have any more to say about it, continue on as judge and jury.. that’s what you all do. Life is too short for this nonsense. Goodbye.
Did you honestly not see or recognize your very own words to others in post 176 when I said them about Osteen?
That in post 181, I showed you were your own words to others?
Really?
