Is Prayer/Veneration/Worship to Mary Biblical?
self | 12-14-14 | ealgeone

The reason for this article is to determine if the worship/veneration given to Mary by the catholic church is justified from a Biblical perspective. This will be evaluated using the Biblical standard and not man’s standard.

Do not forget Joseph in the life of Christ as well. I think he gets short changed.

Joseph was a righteous man as noted by Matthew.

He was as obedient to the Lord as Mary was because he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him.

Consider:

He raised a boy who was not his.

He married a woman who was pregnant not by him.

He taught Jesus a trade as a carpenter.

Joseph protected his family by listening to the angel of the Lord on several occasions.

Bottom line.....Jesus has a pretty awesome set of earthly parents. Both sinners in need of salvation, yet both loved the God and were willing to obey and did obey. Can't do much better than that.

>>then it's easy for me to see that Mary out ranks every other human in life and also in "death".<<

Acts 10:34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:

Do you suppose he forgot to add "accept for Mary"?

I only read short posts. This Protestant obsession with long-winded screeds bores me.

Really? Quite the excuse. You think this is long? 325 words is fairly common in comboxes, and those who only write 1 to 3 sentences as it seems you do must never have much to say. This is not facebook, but an apologetics thread, with RCs living in denial of what is charged, and of such we have seen them state that they will not follow links which impugn Rome, so often posting substantiation here is warranted.

As for "Protestant obsession," you want to see some prolix pro-papal posts by FRCs here? Or how about just one encyclical (QUADRAGESIMO ANNO, POPE PIUS Xl ,MAY 15, 1931) with of over 20,000 words (with more than one paragraph of over 400 words, and at least one sentence of over 90 words, and which also abounds in punctuation)?

Yes, if we regard Peter and the Jewish Apostles, the Jewish Prophets, and Messiah Himself as the chief cornerstone as the foundation of the holy catholic apostolic church and its magesterium. So I was generally on target about Independent Fundamental Baptist theology. I'll be grateful to remember your name tomorrow, much less everything you've written. If I forget I may ask again. I don't like the question much but there are several good answers. One that comes to mind is from the Mass,

Your response lacks the content and thus the context to what you are responding to. Use the "To" link at the bottom of posts, and use paragraphs.

Daniel1212 is one of the better writers on this forum. I've found his information very interesting, well researched and useful.

To produce quality work sometimes takes a few more words....but its worth the read.

Have you confused them with MORMON?

I’ve had several FR Catholics tell me once you’re a Catholic you can’t change. It seems you are a Catholic forever.

I'm trying to understand Mary using both logic and what I've learned about the supernatural world beyond this physical one we're in now.

Assuming Jesus is God, everyone He encountered was touched by God or am I wrong? Beyond that, Joseph had a little discussion with God, and many others did also if one will actually read the Bible instead of relying on memory or what someone told us. Why use a secondary source when the primary is right in front of us?

A further thought. Jesus very clearly says the Holy spirit will point to Him. And if what we think is the Holy Spirit doesn't point to Jesus, IT AINT THE HOLY SPIRIT, IT IS SOMETHING ELSE. That is a very important test.

Now where does Jesus point to? The answer to that is God the Father. When The disciples asked how to pray, Did He say go talk to my mother, and she will get back to me? No, he said “OUR FATHER, WHO ART IN HEAVEN............” We can talk directly to the Father which is a truly amazing thing and bears much contemplation......................

So the discussion here is honoring and respecting the saints and Mary, but the better thing is honoring and worshiping God. And the Bible is very clear on that, saying we should put NOTHING before him. So when one declines the direct invitation to God the Father and talks with Mary and the saints, I think one has done a BIG DISRESPECT to God the Father.

Now if you read Revelations Chapters 2 and 3, Jesus does not give a very good report card for the churches. In fact he tells us to REPENT and go back to our first love or HE will LEAVE. Which I think is go back to the basics, don't get distracted by the shiny things like little children. Now this is a long thread, with lots of arguments about the details. I am reminded of the saying, "The devil is in the details", there is a reason for that saying and evidenced here.

But I have benefited from this discussion. I can point out the flaws of RC very clearly but Protestants have just as many flawed traditions. Personally, I have had to do some discarding of things I thought I knew and been forced to test many things with the Bible as I hope many others here have done.

So in the spirit of getting back to the basics in Revelation, WHAT DOES GOD WANT? If I can get rid of all the confusing details, distill it down, what does He want? What is the main theme of the whole Bible? Now the value here is the process, working out your salvation with fear and trembling. I have a tentative answer for me but would be interested in other thoughts. In my mind, the answer to that reveals a lot about us so do some thinking, maybe even pondering.........

The proper response is: Thank you

LOL. Those who stray from the Catholic faith also stray from common sense or common courtesy. Thank you for noticing.

But only if you are honestly seeking the truth. I suspect those who are not get bored rather quickly.

There is only ONE Mediator between mankind and God and that is Jesus Christ.

There is no question about that. The reason to pray to saints in not to bypass the Mediator but to get to Him.

Let us pray

Pope Sylvester I and Constantine

St. Sylvester, you educated the mighty in their faith.
Make us good teachers in defense of the Holy Church.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, amen.

ROME just teaches that you MUST work to KEEP your salvation.

You must do good works of faith, self denial and love. Work done for hire, or for social recognition, or under a legal obligation does not count in itself, even though it is an obligation of the husband to provide for the wife and the family.

compared to Scripture

I showed you all how Protestant doctrines have no basis in the Holy Scripture and explained all aspects of the Catholic faith agreeing with scripture.

The context is simply for settling disputes between believers

Yes. Like starting your idiotic "reformation" and forgetting what the Holy Scripture teaches. That was a "dispute between believers" till, of course, the Portestants stopped being believers altogether.

self-denial not is the way of salvation, death to self is

And the difference is?

If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me (Matthew 16:24).
