In a new video, megachurch leader and author Rick Warren is calling for Christians to unite with Roman Catholics and Pope Francis, who Warren recently referred to as the Holy Fathera move that is raising concerns among Christians nationwide and is resulting in calls for Warren to repent.
Warren made the comments following his visit to the Vatican last month, where he spoke at an interfaith conference on the Complementarity of Man and Woman.
We have far more in common than what divides us, he said in the two-minute video released by the Catholic News Service on Wednesday, described as being an outline for an ecumenical vision for Catholics and Protestants to work together to defend the sanctity of life, sex and marriage.
They would all say, We believe in the Trinity; we believe in the Bible; we believe in the resurrection; we believe in salvation through Jesus Christ, Warren asserted, speaking of the various denominations within Christianity, of which he included Roman Catholicism. These are the big issues.
The author of the bestselling book The Purpose Driven Life then sought to defend Catholics from those who take issue with the practice of seeking the intercession of Mary and the various deceased persons that have been sainted by the Vatican.
Sometimes protestants think that Catholics worship Mary like shes another god, but thats not exactly Catholic doctrine, Warren contended. People say, What are the saints all about? Why are you praying to the saints? And when you understand what they mean by what theyre saying, theres a whole lot more commonality [that we have with Roman Catholics].
Theres still real differencesno doubt about that, Warren stated. But the most important thing is, if you love Jesus, were on the same team.
He closed by speaking of his belief that Christians and Catholics serve as co-laborers for the cause of defending life and family.
When it comes to the family, we are co-workers in the field in this for the protection of the sanctity of life, the sanctity of sex and the sanctity of marriage, Warren said. So, theres a great commonality and theres no division on any of those three.
But Warrens comments have raised concern from Christian leaders nationwide, who are now calling the Saddleback leader to repentance. Matt Slick of the Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry (CARM) repudiated each of Warrens points.
Sure, there are Catholics who love the real Christ, the one who died on the cross for our sins. That is not the problem, he said. The problem is the Roman Catholic Churchs false teachings concerning Mary and salvation.
Rick Warren says both the Catholics and the Protestants believe in the Bible. But, there is a significant difference between the Bible of the Protestants and the Roman Catholic Church, which has added seven books, Slick wrote. [T]here are numerous problems in the apocryphal books, such as the teaching of salvation by works [and] the offering of money for the sins of the dead.
Warren implies that both Protestants and Catholics have the same view of salvation, he continued. Though its technically correct to say that Catholics believe in salvation through Jesus Christ, they reject justification by faith alone in Christ alone. Instead, it teaches that good works of various kinds are necessary for salvation.
The Christian apologist then pointed to several Roman Catholic teachings on Mary, mainly from the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), such as that Mary by her manifold intercession continues to bring us the gifts of eternal salvation and that [b]y asking Mary to pray for us, we acknowledge ourselves to be poor sinners and we address ourselves to the Mother of Mercy, the All-Holy One.
Rick Warren has not only failed to recognize the problems in these serious areas, but he has lent his credibility as a Protestant pastor in support of the Roman Catholic Church, Slick wrote. This should never be done by any Protestant pastor who takes the Bible seriously. I must conclude that Mr. Warren does not take the word of God seriously and/or he does not understand the damnable teachings of Roman Catholicism regarding salvation.
Rick Warren needs to repent, he said.
Interesting that isn't it?
Nice truthful platitude but doesn’t answer the question
Given your emphasis on Grace id reckon yer Catholic
Southern Baptist would emphasize gift of salvation over the term grace...sanctifying or otherwise
You can discern many things that is not judging someone.
Again the Lord is not double minded, he would not instruct us not to judge and then instruct us to judge. Discern the difference or miss what he instructs.
Mercy has triumphed over judgement. James 2 Why? The blood of Christ shed on the cross. We are not instructed to judge others, we are in fact instructed not to judge others. You are free to believe as you want.
I will let the Lord judge and not confuse discerning evil with judging others/our brethren. I would rather do things the Lords way, it is easy to judge and accuse, but it is of the devil not God.
James 5:19 My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, 20 remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.
So you don't obey that at all? You just let them "wander from the truth" and let God deal with them?
Bless you...bye.
Don’t tell me what Catholics believe. I am Catholic and I know we believe in Grace alone. We don’t believe in faith alone.
I used the term “Rick Warren’s” when I searched site. Your post did come show. When I use the full thread title it does show. Sorry. Next time I’ll know better.
Pulling one verse out of context and building a whole doctrine out of it is going to fail, especially when there is a plethora of other Scripture that contradicts that particular interpretation of it.
If other Scripture appears to contradict that verse, then clearly that verse is not being interpreted correctly.
Matthew 7:1-5 Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, Let me take the speck out of your eye, when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.
“Who are these “millions of evangelicals” that you speak of? Have you been thinking about evangelicals again”.
Do the research yourself. It’s the truth.
Millions of Evangelicals despise Billy Graham?
LOL. He has brought Christ to millions, and what you are claiming is not true.
And I’m from North Carolina and know Billy Graham. What I say is fact. He loves Catholics and has always held them in high esteem. He puts down no Christian, and yes he thinks Catholics are Christians. Now don’t that beat all.
Billy Graham: Pope John Paul II Was “Most Influential Voice” in 100 Years
By Michael Ireland
Chief Correspondent, ASSIST News Service
CBN.com LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (ANS) — Speaking on the April 2 edition of CNN’s Larry King Live program Dr. Billy Graham said that that Pope John Paul II was the most influential voice for morality and peace in the world in the last 100 years.
Dr. Graham told Larry King he had the privilege of seeing the Pope on several occasions at the Vatican.
“And tonight, I have a very strange feeling of loss. I almost feel as though one of my family members has gone. I loved him very much and had the opportunity of discussing so many things with him. And we wrote each other several times during the years,” Dr. Graham said.
Larry King asked Dr. Graham: “Did he actually say to you once, “We are brothers’ “?
GRAHAM: That’s correct. He certainly did. He held my hand the first time that I met him about 1981 — he’d just been Pope for two years when I saw him first. Because when he was elevated to the papacy, I was preaching in his cathedral in Krakow that very day. And we had thousands of people in the streets. And watching the television today of Krakow has brought back many memories.
KING: You said that he was an Evangelist.
GRAHAM: He was, indeed. He traveled throughout the world to bring his Christian message to the world. And we see tonight the outpouring from the world that he touched. And I think he touched almost everybody in the whole world.
KING: What, Billy, in your thoughts — you said you feel like it’s a personal loss. What in the human sense was so special about him?
GRAHAM: I think it was his background in Poland. And I had finished preaching all over Poland, gotten to know many people, and I knew a little bit about where he came from.
“And he was a suffering pope, too. He suffered as much as anybody you could ever imagine. His mother died when he was young. And he had that terrible assassination attack. And through it all, he taught us how to suffer. And I think in recent days he’s taught us how to die.
KING: There is no question in your mind that he is with God now?
GRAHAM: Oh, no. There may be a question about my own, but I don’t think Cardinal Wojtyla, or the Pope — I think he’s with the Lord, because he believed. He believed in the Cross. That was his focus throughout his ministry, the Cross, no matter if you were talking to him from personal issue or an ethical problem, he felt that there was the answer to all of our problems, the cross and the resurrection. And he was a strong believer.
KING: I understand that you’ve been invited to the funeral, but because of your own health, you can’t attend. But someone in the Graham family is going to go?
GRAHAM: That’s correct.
KING: Do you know who will go?
GRAHAM: I don’t have the physical strength to go, and I have been invited. I was invited about six or seven months ago by the Vatican ahead of time. And they’ve asked that I come. So I asked if I could send my daughter. They wanted a woman to come representing me. So I’m asking my daughter, Anne Lotz, to go. And she’s going with an associate of mine. And then my son, Franklin, will be going to the enthronement of the new Pope.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Huffington Post?!?!?!
He who shall not be named on the RF?!?!?!?!?!?
THOSE are examples of *millions of evangelicals* who *despise* Billy Graham?!?!?!?!
Wow! That’s desperation if ever I saw it.
FOTFLOL!!!!!
And it’s not *MY* research. You made the assertion. It’s YOUR responsibility to back it up with facts, not mine to do your work for you.
I’m not the one making the claim and it’s not up to me to prove its validity.
LOL, what a bizarre response to my post and and your claim that millions of Evangelicals despising Billy Graham.
“”Billy Graham is absolutely despised by millions of evangelicals “”
No he isn’t.
So let me ask you this.
If Catholics get he-who-shall-not-be-named banned from the FR RF as a hate site, then why do CATHOLICS continue to post from it to prove their points about “Protestants”?????
Why is OK for Catholics to use it against *Protestants* but *Protestants* can’t use it against Catholics? Because this is certainly NOT the first time I’ve seen that happen.
It smacks of heavy handed censorship.
Not to mention hypocrisy.
Then it looks like Catholics could take lessons from him.
How does Billy Graham support Mormonism?
Do you believe Catholics are Christian?
I second that.
I watched a tv show about those books. Tests have proved they were written centuries after the rest of the Bible. They did not belong in the Bible. I have done research on them too and every site said the same thing. They were not written when people thought they were. Not fake but not in the right time period. I believed most were written in the 3rd century. They should have been removed.
