Pastor Joel Osteen to Oprah: "I Can't Be A Big Blessing To People If I'm Poor & Broke"

I don't know where or how to begin, so since Townhall is a secular website with many Christian viewers, I will simply post a couple pieces of scripture--one for each comment, although there are multiple choice Bible verses contrasting what Osteen personally believes:

OSTEEN: "I don't know who would say that you're not supposed to, you know, leave your children better than they were before."

GOD: "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honor your father and mother'--which is the first commandment with a promise--'that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.' Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord." (Ephesians 6:1-4)

OSTEEN: "There's a belief that you're supposed to suffer more and be poor and to show your humility. I just, I don't see the Bible that way."

GOD: "This brings you great joy, although you may have to suffer for a short time in various trials. Such trials show the proven character of your faith, which is much more valuable than gold – gold that is tested by fire, even though it is passing away – and will bring praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed." (1 Peter 1:6-7)

As far as what God says about how we bless people and what we bless them with, God asks us to bless people with eternal gifts--namely, Him, and not earthly ones--regardless of our mental, physical, or monetary state:

GOD: "But He [God] said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:9-10)

Parting note: Belief in God, Jesus, and His Word is worthless if you do not love and obey Him. Satan believes all these things but doesn't love Him nor follow His commands.

If the pope isnt under Petrine authority I don’t know who is. There are good and bad protestant churches just as there are good and bad RC leaders and congregations.

We are talking doctrine based on Petrine authority (Credo and Catechism) and not random utterances from individuals, Popes or others. The doctrine of papal infallibility is a very limited one in a very defined context where the Pope formally speaks ex cathedra in matters of Church belief based on scripture, revelation, and sacred tradition.

The birds argue, the dead point fingers. Hope is just around, a corner. Stay well, the storm just beyond the lies. Pope frankie, is the liar, of all lies... mark your spot, by this day

Or did he flee and live among non-Jews, or even hiding out in the wilderness?

Interesting question, and I have no idea - never heard it talked about. The only thing I could think of was that Rich Mullins song - My Deliverer.

Which is why I don’t mind not being rich. I have enough trouble in this world. And people forget no matter what material possessions we have in this life, we all still end up in a 6 ft hole in the ground.

I’d rather leave my kids something far more important than things. Like faith in God and love for one another.

My parents, their relatives/ friends had little money but they influenced everyone they came into contact with. They taught by example. It does not take a lot to influence someone. I had an appt with my eye surgeon yesterday. She had to deaden my eye and use tweezers to stretch my eye muscles. Yeah, fun! There was a guy sitting beside me. I have an impression that most Blacks here are dems so I was hesitant about talking about things in the news. He surprised me by saying only the Good Lord could help this country. He was as fed up with politicians as I am. We had a wonderful talk. He left before I did but he came back inside to tell me he really enjoyed our talk. Kinda made my day better. We never know about folks.

It's priest craft pure and simple. If you pay your preacher, he'll say what you want to hear.

"‘What we're finding is that when we ask them about all the key issues of the day, [90 percent of them are] telling us, Yes, the Bible speaks to every one of these issues. Then we ask them: Well, are you teaching your people what the Bible says about those issues?--and the numbers drop...to less than 10 percent of pastors who say they will speak to it.’

Paying a preacher isn't God's way. If the flock can fire you, you're not in God's church.
