Patti Smith is to play this year's Vatican Christmas Concert in Rome next month.
The punk singer will perform live at the Italian city's Auditorium Conciliazione on December 13 following a personal invitation from Pope Francis, according to The International Business Times. The entire event is set to be broadcast live on TV.
Smith's booking has evoked a mixed response from Christian groups, with Catholic organisation Portosalvo apparently describing the decision as "blasphemous", following the singer's 1975 song 'Gloria', which famously featured the lines: "Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine".
The singer met Pope Francis at St. Peter's Square last April, where the pair shook hands.
The Vatican Christmas Concert will also feature a performance from "singing nun" Sister Christina Scuccia, who recently won Italy's version of The Voice and covered Madonna.

well she didn’t rip up francis’ picture... :-)
i am sure once again the media’s screwing up what this really is.....

Jesus didn’t hire them to do his taxes though.
explain exactly how this is reaching out to nonbelievers for them to come to Christ? there’s no mention of Christ. it’s hiring a secular singer. this is the very same stuff we criticize megachurches of doing. it doesn’t work.
the bride wanted elton john. that’s why he was there.
Why not? Is she worse than Tom Jones, Bryan Adams, or BB King, or anyone else who has played the Vatican?
Is some suggestive pop music better than others?
Jesus would have broken bread with her. To say otherwise is saying that some people are irredeemable.
I am amused with those who lectured others about their lack of faith when previous popes were in office.
Those same lecturers cluck and gripe about this pope - he doesn’t meet their superior standards of faith.
They know they’re right and the pope is wrong and they are unwilling to be judged the way they judged others with previous popes.
Dangerous territory.
I think they ought to be at least a Christian.
I wouldn’t have muslims goat-calling shrieks at a Christmas concert.
I wouldn’t play secular music there if it’s a Christmas concert.
I wouldn’t have socialists or atheists playing. Why? They wouldn’t want to be there anyway.
breaking bread is not the same as HIRING her.
Patti Smith is a pro-abort, pro queer “marriage” radical leftist. So she fits in well with Francis’ crowd.
“The Holy Father is opening wide the doors to all in hopes that people will return to or finally join the faith”
I have not me the first Catholic that cares for this pope and that’s saying a lot considering I’m a Knight of Columbus. He is tolerated, nothing more.
Oh, I know you’re just joking.
Rush is not the Pope. What a silly comparison. The Pope has a witness to keep - Rush does not.
That's when Rush needed to tell the bride that no performer who said Jesus was a homosexual would be performing at their wedding. Period. I like Rush, but I don't know how religious he is, if at all.
Thanks.
I didn’t know if her family had been Catholic or not.
She became Christian, at least for a while, when married to Fred Smith. She stopped singing that line.
She’s not a Catholic and has never been a Catholic. She has made many remarks about her disdain for religion, unless it’s some leftist nutcase religion.
I can’t believe what’s happened in 35 years.
Great story telling. I could see it all unfolding. For most Rundgren devotees, that song, saw the light and hello its me must be performed if this is supposed to be a real Runt concert. I’ve always liked Fair Warning on Initiation and Dont you ever learn, can we still be friends, etc, etc.
She stopped singing that song, or line because she doesn’t believe that any more.
She was Christian for a while, and probably still is, but liberal.
In the 60’s when she was young, she was unmarried and pregnant. She did not have an abortion but gave the baby up for adoption.
