Where Fundamentalists Are Right: 5 Things Catholics Need to Take Seriously Again
ChurchPOP ^ | 2014 | Brantly Millegan

The term “fundamentalist” is a pejorative term today, used to label someone the speaker believes is an irrational religious extremist of some kind.

But a hundred years ago, the term was taken as a badge of honor by theologically conservative Protestants to distinguish themselves from liberal Protestantism. While liberal Protestants in mainline denominations were denying basic Christian teachings like the authority of the Bible and the bodily resurrection of Jesus, conservative Protestants called for going back to the “fundamentals” of the faith – hence the term.

There are obviously a lot of issues on which Catholics and fundamentalists disagree, but there are a few important issues for which fundamentalists take a lot of heat in our culture that Catholics actually agree with them on – or at least are supposed to. Unfortunately, in my experience many Catholics – afraid to have themselves labeled a “fundamentalist” – can throw the baby out with the bath water and end up denying beliefs espoused by fundamentalists that are also taught by the Catholic Church.

Here are 5 things that are already present in the Catholic faith, but that Catholics could learn from their fundamentalist brothers and sisters to take more seriously:

Paul in I Corinthians 15 speaks to me most powerfully to this day. I could once recite it by heart, KJV of course. Beautiful and moving, Christianity encapsulated.

>the concept of mortal and venial sins....<

so, you would say that God considers child sexual abuse with the same disdain as yelling "damn it" when you hit your thumb with a hammer????????????????????????really

James gives a great answer to this.

James 2:10 "For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all."

We also have the 10 commandments as an example. Do you equate not honoring your mother and father as a greater sin than murder?

Are any of these any greater or lessor in the eyes of God from a sin perspective?

Exodus 20:12-17

12“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you.

13“You shall not murder.

14“You shall not commit adultery.

15“You shall not steal.

16“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

17“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

Paul further clarified this view of any sin, no matter how small, was sufficient to keep us out of Heaven, when he wrote Romans 3:23 "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God," and then he made clear the ramifications of our sins while also making clear how we can be free of sins in Romans 6:23 when he wrote "for the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

the Catholic church is correct in this regard. Read all you want but be careful of interpreting scripture to fit your own personal needs.

kinda like catholicism telling priests they can't be married.

"5) I will concede that in recent years our Protestant brothers and sisters have proven more willing to put themselves out there, outside of their comfort zones, in the effort to evangelize others." Recently. Yes. In fact, protestant missionaries recently began evangelizing China in 1807. Nice to see them getting with the program :-) History of Protestant Missionary Groups in China

“Yes, we hear the entire Bible every three years during Mass.”

No, if you attend mass for three years, you will still miss large portions of God’s Word. This has been analyzed on FR and posted several times.

>ANYONE who tells me God did not create but used evolution and then tells me sincere Muslims go to heaven is not a Christian at all, neither is that religion<

to deny creation would never be a teaching in any Christian church that I know of. Evolution, that is the progression, within species of changes points to the fact that there are hundreds of breeds of dogs when God probably just created the canine species. Sincere Muslims can indeed go to heaven if they were unaware of the salvation message of Jesus and lived, otherwise, decent honorable lives. There are very nice people in this world who basically know nothing about Christ. For God to condemn everyone who ever lived on Earth who did not follow Christianity to spend eternity in hell would be totally in opposition to what we know as a merciful and just God.

well, frances appears on his to establishing evolution and in the process denying creation. evolution, however, as you use it does not mean the same to evolutionists. in their world view God plays no part in the universe...at all.

So you believe sincere muslims, who worship Allah, can go to Heaven if unaware of the salvation message?? Just. Simply. Wow.

Then by that logic(?)all roads lead to Heaven. The Hindu, the Buddists, the athiests, everyone gets in with your plan. All the while totally denying the Bible.

John 14:6 I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father but through Me.

All Muslims are aware of who Jesus is and what He did if they read the Koran. However, they deny He died on the cross. So the knowledge is there.

But the catechism does say catholics and muslims worship the same god.

CCC 841 also references Vatican II's Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions, Nostra Aetate, 3, that makes the teaching of the Council perhaps even clearer:

The Church regards with esteem also the Moslems. They adore the one God, living and subsisting in Himself; merciful and all-powerful, the Creator of heaven and earth, who has spoken to men; they take pains to submit wholeheartedly to even his inscrutable decrees, just as Abraham, with whom the faith of Islam takes pleasure in linking itself, submitted to God.

Again. Just. Simply. Wow. I am glad the catholic church holds muslims in such high regard. BTW, these are the same Muslims who totally deny who Jesus was and what He did for us on the Cross.

“We need the Church to interpret Scripture for us.”

To me it’s a no-brainer.

Holier men than I, more intelligent, wiser men than I, have left their interpretations of the scriptures.

Who am I that I should substitute my judgment for theirs?

Many great and precious truths in that one chapter for sure. I can still pretty much quote the first chapter of Hebrews by heart. It was an assignment for the class on that book. An entire semester was devoted to Hebrews and the mid-term exam included writing out that first chapter.

kinda like catholicism telling priests they can't be married.

simply a church rule...nothing wrong with marriage, there are MANY married Catholic priests....but the rule says if you want to become a priest, you must remain celibate and you must be MALE...

Hardly! One will get you excommunicated if you don't confess it to a priest. The other will get you transferred to another parish

you don't have to confess the hammer incident...venial sin, and as far as the other, you could always leave the church for a denomination and thereby join the much larger group of miscreants...

if you attend Mass for three years you will experience FAR more biblical teaching than you would recieve during and weekly protestant service.....

a non-biblical rule....one of many by catholicism.

from catholic answers:

Further, in the Latin rite there are a few married men, converted ministers from other faiths, who are ordained to the Catholic priesthood. This, however, is not common. Finally, in neither the Latin rite nor the Eastern rites do priests (or deacons) marry after they have been ordained, except in extraordinary circumstances.

are you really familiar with what catholicism teaches??

I didn't say that and you know it...I said if the person had no knowledge of Christ, or the bible (he denies nothing) he can be saved.

Reading the mind of another Freeper is a form of "making it personal."

Discuss the issues all you want, but do not make it personal.

I know exactly what the church teaches....as more and more ministers leave their various denominations for a return to the true church of Jesus Christ, married men becoming priests has become far more frequent than in the past and it will become increasingly more frequent as more and more protestant clergy see the light.

>everyone gets in with your plan. All the while totally denying the Bible.<

I know you said this and this is an unbiblical position. I call it the church of oprah belief.

Can these people be saved? Yes, but only through Christ. The Gospel is open to all who will believe.

” if you attend Mass for three years you will experience FAR more biblical teaching than you would recieve during and weekly protestant service..... “

Don’t kid yourself.

Instead of meaningless repetition, we are taught through whole books of the Sacred Scriptures, verse by verse, book by book. In addition, our congregation is reading through the whole Bible together in our personal devotional.

Please note, hearing Scripture read is good, but being taught what they mean in their entirety is much better.

Missing vast portions of God’s revelation leaves you deficient.
Repetitiously hearing the same thing over and over without understanding the context and meaning, is to remain in ignorance.

Best.
