No, really, he is Catholic. He’s just not very good at his job. I assume he means well. He is a very kind, gentle, and in many ways, humble man. He’s just not a very good pope. The last five popes have been fair-to-middling in terms - even Pope Benedict. This pope is a lousy communicator, he doesn’t clarify things well, he unintentionally encourages indifferentism, and he doesn’t seem to understand some of the complexities of the world. (A few he does get, i.e. the danger of ISIS for instance).
People shouldn’t get so upset over this pope though. He’ll die like all the other popes and he’ll be replaced. He’s 77 and has already hinted at the idea of stepping down.
