The city of Houston has issued subpoenas demanding a group of pastors turn over any sermons dealing with homosexuality, gender identity or Annise Parker, the city’s first openly lesbian mayor. And those ministers who fail to comply could be held in contempt of court.

“The city’s subpoena of sermons and other pastoral communications is both needless and unprecedented,” Alliance Defending Freedom attorney Christina Holcomb said in a statement. “The city council and its attorneys are engaging in an inquisition designed to stifle any critique of its actions.”

That’s a fact.

As sermons are spoken how do they suggest they "turn them over"? They might demand their notes although some pastors do not use notes so what then?

This is both silly and disturbing and should be met with a some what polite suggestion that the damneder should promptly remove themselves to a place where the climate is much warmed then Texas.

" What governmental interest is involved in what preachers preach??"

In this case none.

There is however, legitimate government interest in preachers who speak Jihad and Race War.

But somehow I don't think the mayor is going to be issuing subpoenas for any mosques any time soon.

I suggest everyone write a few sermons and post them in Houston. It’s about time someone took the fight to them. Every pastor, rabbi and priest should send the beotch one...

Houston is just full of liberals; wonder how Republicans can compete in Harris County still.

How can you have a subpoena without suspicion of a crime? What judge issued this subpoena?

"Colonel Von Luger, it is the sworn duty of all officers to try to escape. If they can't, it is their duty to cause the enemy to use an inordinate number of troops to guard them and their sworn duty to harass the enemy to the best of their ability."
-- Group Captain Ramsey, The Great Escape

And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest questioned them,
saying, “We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man's blood upon us.”
But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.
The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree.
God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.
And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”
-- Acts 5:27-32

Looks like the Baptists in Houston need to play more on offense instead of defense by default.

Attention all denominations: Look where lukewarm gets you!

I would immediately sue the city for $1 billion in federal court. That suit would be filed by end of day.

Quite a few, but not all, pastors will be cowed by this. We’ll see if they can practice what they preach.

Concur. This will be dropped, and if it isn't, the next step is likely to make the Stonewall riot look like a Tupperware party. I don't mean civil disobedience. It won't be civil at all.

What I would say were I a priest, minister, or rabbi in Houston: “You atheists are welcome to come and listen to my sermons, but I won’t type them up and send them to you.”
