Why would anyone become Catholic?

Why would intelligent, successful people give up their careers, alienate their friends, and cause havoc in their families...to become Catholic? Indeed, why would anyone become Catholic?

As an evangelist and author who recently threw my own life into some turmoil by deciding to enter the Catholic Church, I've faced this question a lot lately. That is one reason I decided to make this documentary; it's part of my attempt to try to explain to those closest to me why I would do such a crazy thing.

Convinced isn't just about me, though. The film is built around interviews with some of the most articulate and compelling Catholic converts in our culture today, including Scott Hahn, Francis Beckwith, Taylor Marshall, Holly Ordway, Abby Johnson, Jeff Cavins, Devin Rose, Matthew Leonard, Mark Regnerus, Jason Stellman, John Bergsma, Christian Smith, Kevin Vost, David Currie, Richard Cole, and Kenneth Howell. It also contains special appearances by experts in the field of conversion such as Patrick Madrid and Donald Asci.

Ultimately, this is a story about finding truth, beauty, and fulfillment in an unexpected place, and then sacrificing to grab on to it. I think it will entertain and inspire you, and perhaps even give you a fresh perspective on an old faith.

>>But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.<<

God says no one has seen, heard, or even conceived but Catholics say they have? Wow!

It would seem, as usual, catholics take everything as bashing them...when in fact it’s correcting the terrible errors the church has done and continues to do which mis-lead those who are kept from Christ Jesus and the “assurance” of salvation in Him.

This as Christians we are called to do....it has been that way since Jesus Himself corrected and warned the Sadduces and Pharasees and all those who opposed His message...to this very day.

As is written...”There will be false teachers today just as there were false prophets in Israel. They bring destructive heresies, cause destruction, and many follow their error. They forsake the right way and go astray . Those who follow their error would be better to have never known the truth”...2 Peter 2

....”The Spirit expressly warns that some will fall away from the faith and speak lies and doctrines of demons. This includes doctrines such as forbidding marriage, commanding to abstain from meats, etc. 1 Tim. 4

.....The time will come when men will not endure sound doctrine, but will heap to themselves teachers after their own lusts, and will turn aside from truth to fables. So he charged faithful teachers to preach the truth and rebuke such errors....2 Tim.4

When someone tells you that false teaching is not a big problem and you don’t need to be very concerned about it, he is teaching you a false doctrine when he says it! And it is just a matter of time before he will try to get you to accept other false teachings!..... anytime a man does tell you that false teachers are not a serious danger, you can be sure he is telling you that either because he is a false teacher or because he is under the influence of false teachers!

If I had known this thread was going to turn into just another Catholic bashing by the usual suspects I would have made it CATHOLIC CAUCUS.

Better make it ROMAN CATHOLIC CAUCUS, so other FReepers do not confuse with other RCC offshoots or, even, the Holy Catholic Church comprised of all believers in and followers of The Lord Jesus Christ, our Shepherd Whose voice we recognize and respond to.

Jesus was a Jewish rabbi.

-------------------------------------------

Do your priests eat kosher? What rules did you keep and which did you cast in a Luther-esque manner?

Jesus didn't really "emulate" the Rabbis. He did have a lot to say about their practices...

Based on the "bones and filth" comment I don't think He likes the Catholic practices of kissing dessicated remains...

Matthew 23:1-34

Jesus said to the crowds and to His disciples:

The Pharisees and the teachers of the Law are experts in the Law of Moses. So obey everything they teach you, but don’t do as they do. After all, they say one thing and do something else.

They pile heavy burdens on people’s shoulders and won’t lift a finger to help. Everything they do is just to show off in front of others. They even make a big show of wearing Scripture verses on their foreheads and arms, and they wear big tassels for everyone to see. They love the best seats at banquets and the front seats in the meeting places. And when they are in the market, they like to have people greet them as their teachers.

But none of you should be called a teacher. You have only one teacher, and all of you are like brothers and sisters. Don’t call anyone on earth your father. All of you have the same Father in heaven. None of you should be called the leader. The Messiah is your only leader. Whoever is the greatest should be the servant of the others. If you put yourself above others, you will be put down. But if you humble yourself, you will be honored.

You Pharisees and teachers of the Law of Moses are in for trouble! You’re nothing but show-offs. You lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. You won’t go in yourselves, and you keep others from going in.

You Pharisees and teachers of the Law of Moses are in for trouble! You’re nothing but show-offs. You travel over land and sea to win one follower. And when you have done so, you make that person twice as fit for hell as you are.

You are in for trouble! You are supposed to lead others, but you are blind. You teach that it doesn’t matter if a person swears by the temple. But you say that it does matter if someone swears by the gold in the temple. You blind fools! Which is greater, the gold or the temple that makes the gold sacred?

You also teach that it doesn’t matter if a person swears by the altar. But you say that it does matter if someone swears by the gift on the altar. Are you blind? Which is more important, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred? Anyone who swears by the altar also swears by everything on it. And anyone who swears by the temple also swears by God, who lives there. To swear by heaven is the same as swearing by God’s throne and by the one who sits on that throne.

You Pharisees and teachers are show-offs, and you’re in for trouble! You give God a tenth of the spices from your garden, such as mint, dill, and cumin. Yet you neglect the more important matters of the Law, such as justice, mercy, and faithfulness. These are the important things you should have done, though you should not have left the others undone either. You blind leaders! You strain out a small fly but swallow a camel.

You Pharisees and teachers are show-offs, and you’re in for trouble! You wash the outside of your cups and dishes, while inside there is nothing but greed and selfishness. You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of a cup, and then the outside will also be clean. You Pharisees and teachers are in for trouble! You’re nothing but show-offs. You’re like tombs that have been whitewashed. On the outside they are beautiful, but inside they are full of bones and filth. That’s what you are like. Outside you look good, but inside you are evil and only pretend to be good.

You Pharisees and teachers are nothing but show-offs, and you’re in for trouble! You build monuments for the prophets and decorate the tombs of good people. And you claim that you would not have taken part with your ancestors in killing the prophets. But you prove that you really are the relatives of the ones who killed the prophets. So keep on doing everything they did. You are nothing but snakes and the children of snakes! How can you escape going to hell?

I will send prophets and wise people and experts in the Law of Moses to you. But you will kill them or nail them to a cross or beat them in your meeting places or chase them from town to town. That’s why you will be held guilty for the murder of every good person, beginning with the good man Abel. This also includes Barachiah’s son Zechariah, the man you murdered between the temple and the altar. I can promise that you people living today will be punished for all these things!

....”Short of a Damascus road experience the roman cult will not abandon the false teachings on Mary..... It would ruin any credibility the roman cult may have.”......

There have been some in the catholic leadership who have attempted to calm down the mary worship....they would not attempt that if they did not realize there’s a serious problem nor would they risk their position. Unfortunately they are met with great opposition for speaking out.

Besides catholics mary (who is not the mary of the Bible) is going to instrumental in uniting all the religions who also have a female entity they worship....almost all of them do.

I will not allow the haters to mock Christ’s Pilgrim Church on Earth. Learned my lesson with this post. That’s my last word on the subject.

One final request, since the FReepathon is humming along now, will you and other RCC members still here do as I do and go immediately to donate to FR what you would normally spend on a month's worth of alcoholic drinks, lottery tickets, greens fees, movie theaters?

Jim's the one who has to pay for the bandwidth we've all burned.

You would have had to make it a Catholic and Evangelical caucus because of this line in the article:
As an evangelist and author who recently threw my own life into some turmoil by deciding to enter the Catholic Church
I will not allow the haters to mock Christ’s Pilgrim Church on Earth

LOL, the Protestants and other non-Catholics are mocked all the time on these threads.

Have you seen any of the childish pictures with words involved?

And the condescending, arrogant belittling posts to non-Catholics?

The Church that Jesus started---never heard it called His Pilgrim Church---is described in my tagline:

The Body of Christ [His church]: Made up of every born again Christian. Source--Jesus in the Bible
That’s my last word on the subject.

OK

....”Jesus Christ, our Shepherd Whose voice we recognize and respond to”....

I like this equation very much....of course it’s really much deeper then this ...

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them” = mutual recognition.

“They follow me, and I give them eternal life” = reciprocal activity.

“They shall not perish forever, and no one shall pluck them out of my hand” = an authoritative assurance.

When there are so many flocks of sheep, it is necessary to mark them..... Our Savior marks us.....

One is on their ear,...the other is on their foot..... These are two marks of Christ’s sheep not to be found on any other; but they are to be found on all who are His Sheep..

...the mark on the ear... “My sheep hear my voice.” They hear spiritually.... It is not by learning catechisms, reading theological books, or listening to endless controversies, that he finds this out.

....the mark on the foot.... “I know them, and they follow me.”....They follow him.. they are gently led, not harshly driven.... They follow him as the Captain of their salvation; they trust in the power of his arm to clear the way for them. ....All their trust on him is stayed; all their hope on him they lean..... They follow him as their teacher; they call no man “Rabbi” under heaven, but Christ alone.... He is the infallible source of their creeds neither will they allow their minds to be ruled by conclaves, councils, nor decrees.

You mean these words?

John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

Of course we believe them. Why don't Catholocs?

John 14:6 - Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

I believe the very words of Christ.

Do you believe you can only enter Heaven through Jesus, that Jesus alone is sufficient for Salvation, terycarl?

But it was the CATHOLIC CHURCH that God used to develop the Bible.

You are missing the elephant issue that is behind the "Catholic church gave you the Bible" assertion, as this assertion is hardly meaningful unless it means that the discerners and stewards of Divine revelation are the supreme infallible authority and interpreters of it.

But which is a manifest fallacious premise.

Protestants can’t change history.. It’s absolutely mindboggling that the majority of protestants on FR will not give the Catholic Church credit for anything. They just ignore irrefutable facts. Ignore the history of Christianity and want to constantly rant and rave about the Catholic Church’s non-role in anything. It’s really sad.

Which brings us to fallacious premise #2, that that Rome today is the NT church based historical descent. It simply is not, but they just ignore irrefutable facts, as history is only what Rome says it is and means for a faithful RC. As in a cult.

The selection from Spurgeon was wonderful, and so true.

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. (James 3:17)

Need to fully conform it it.

I’m still waiting to hear whether Peter, assumed by Catholics to be “the first pope,” wore gaudy, flashy robes, a tall hat and carried a blinged out shepherd’s staff.
