Why would anyone become Catholic?

Why would intelligent, successful people give up their careers, alienate their friends, and cause havoc in their families...to become Catholic? Indeed, why would anyone become Catholic?

As an evangelist and author who recently threw my own life into some turmoil by deciding to enter the Catholic Church, I've faced this question a lot lately. That is one reason I decided to make this documentary; it's part of my attempt to try to explain to those closest to me why I would do such a crazy thing.

Convinced isn't just about me, though. The film is built around interviews with some of the most articulate and compelling Catholic converts in our culture today, including Scott Hahn, Francis Beckwith, Taylor Marshall, Holly Ordway, Abby Johnson, Jeff Cavins, Devin Rose, Matthew Leonard, Mark Regnerus, Jason Stellman, John Bergsma, Christian Smith, Kevin Vost, David Currie, Richard Cole, and Kenneth Howell. It also contains special appearances by experts in the field of conversion such as Patrick Madrid and Donald Asci.

Ultimately, this is a story about finding truth, beauty, and fulfillment in an unexpected place, and then sacrificing to grab on to it. I think it will entertain and inspire you, and perhaps even give you a fresh perspective on an old faith.

Now how can each church do its “own” mass? Would that be, dare it be said, interpreting things your own way??

There you go holding up a mirror again...

Your response is non-responsive.

Again, you have made a serious accusation against many on this thread of “implied blasphemy” against the Holy Spirit.

I adjure you to support this accusation. It is important that you do.

If the image of Mary appears on my toast is it still ok to eat it?

Off topic, but am I the only one annoyed with much (not all) of contemporary Christian music?

I serve Jesus; He is the King of kings, He is my Savior, He is my Lord, He is my ultimate Commander.

I want to serve Him and be his Soldier. Much of today’s Christian music sounds like the singers want to be Jesus’ “girlfriend,” even when the singer is a guy!

On last Sunday's telecast, Charles Stanley said the music selection was the number one cause of congregations splitting off or disolving.

I have never ever been to a snake handling church in my life nor any of the others you listed. I do not support snake handling but, if others do, that is their business between God and them. When I see church services on tv, I really expect people to act like they are glad to be in God’s House. Are you mind reading about the heart rate? I have sensed God’s presence during a very quiet song, sermon, etc. Then, I have sensed His presence during “I’ll Fly Away.” We just have to listen for Him.

Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."

------------------------------------------

You mean Jesus didn't say "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent and pray to His mom?"

You've positioned yourself as the smart FReeper on this thread On the contrary, I'm in the JV league (hat tip to the occupier of the WH). Most Catholics here on the RF are far more eminently qualified to discuss these things than I am.

why haven't you explained to "the fundys"of their grave sin, or given an example of how I/we have "implied blasphemy" against the Holy Spirit?

As I explained in an earlier post the doctrines of the reformation movement, particularly once saved, always saved, removes the necessity of repentance on the part of protestants. Coupled with individual interpretation of scripture which possesses neither the competence or authority to command repentance.

BTW, I have never posted that there were and are no Christians within the RCC.

And I thank you for that.

I suppose Roman Catholics nailing themselves to the cross is much more dignified.

Jesus loves me! This I know,
For the Bible tells me so;
Little ones to Him belong;
They are weak, but He is strong.

Refrain:
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me! This I know,
As He loved so long ago,
Taking children on His knee,
Saying, “Let them come to Me.”

Jesus loves me still today,
Walking with me on my way,
Wanting as a friend to give
Light and love to all who live.

Jesus loves me! He who died
Heaven’s gate to open wide;
He will wash away my sin,
Let His little child come in.

Jesus loves me! He will stay
Close beside me all the way;
Thou hast bled and died for me,
I will henceforth live for Thee.

Do not make this thread "about" individual Freepers. That is also a form of "making it personal."

Discuss the issues all you want, but do not make it personal.

NON-RESPONSIVE.

You have placed yourself in a dangerous position and foolishly.

You have accused me and others of “implied blasphemy” against the Holy Spirit but WITHOUT a shred of Scriptural evidence that anything I’ve said implies blasphemy against Him.

One might conclude you’re just joshing around on FR, not aware you’ve crossed a major line that joins you with those who accused Jesus of Nazareth of having a demon.

The Catholic Church has been around for 2,000 years. Same church, same doctrine.

You claim Peter as “the first pope.”

Did Peter wear fancy robes, a big tall hat and live in gilded, jeweled luxury? Did the other apostles receive expensive rings as symbols of office?

The early Church and today’s Catholic empire are two entirely different animals!

Have been giving the whole issue of catholicism a great deal of thought and think maybe it might be better to define what a cult is.

One of the earmarks is the members follow ‘a person’ or ‘entity’.......either in actual or imagined to appear as real... alive or of someone who has passed on.

The behavior in how they go about this may differ but the idea is typical... there is a primary “leader” who determines how they worship and the doctrines/rules of the cult adhered to.

Does catholicism fit this basic earmark having a Pope and Ministerial who determine the doctrines and what is or not permissible?......added to this is the elevation of Mary, who has passed on.

It's common for cults to use Christian verbiage intermingled with their agenda or even acknowledge Jesus Christ...but He is not the focus or central to their beliefs. rather used a a sort of seal of approval or stamp mark that the teachings are legit.

....”Now how can each church do its “own” mass? Would that be, dare it be said, interpreting things your own way??”.....

It appears so after viewing several Mass’s. There are even Mass’s conducted by open homosexuals. So there are vast differences among those who head the church they’re over.

Co-Redemptrix ....just the name alone indicates someone other than Jesus Christ “redeems”....be it with or above or under...makes no difference. It’s still placing emphasis on equal par with Jesus as a joint redeemer...which HE shares with no one else...He is the soul redeemer...it’s through His blood that was sacrificed...no other but His redeems man.

I do believe there are true Christians in the catholic church who love Jesus and He is foremost in their hearts and minds....some remain because they are attempting to change things within the church....others would simply be considered bad catholics for not adhering to the status quo.......Then there are those who draw closer to Jesus and eventually leave the church for they cannot continue when they see and understand what Jesus says and requires. .....I actually think God is trying to bring those believers out now, before it's too late.

In one sense or another, a great deal longer than that.

Astoreth and Ba’al worship?
