Why would anyone become Catholic?

Why would intelligent, successful people give up their careers, alienate their friends, and cause havoc in their families...to become Catholic? Indeed, why would anyone become Catholic?

As an evangelist and author who recently threw my own life into some turmoil by deciding to enter the Catholic Church, I've faced this question a lot lately. That is one reason I decided to make this documentary; it's part of my attempt to try to explain to those closest to me why I would do such a crazy thing.

Convinced isn't just about me, though. The film is built around interviews with some of the most articulate and compelling Catholic converts in our culture today, including Scott Hahn, Francis Beckwith, Taylor Marshall, Holly Ordway, Abby Johnson, Jeff Cavins, Devin Rose, Matthew Leonard, Mark Regnerus, Jason Stellman, John Bergsma, Christian Smith, Kevin Vost, David Currie, Richard Cole, and Kenneth Howell. It also contains special appearances by experts in the field of conversion such as Patrick Madrid and Donald Asci.

Ultimately, this is a story about finding truth, beauty, and fulfillment in an unexpected place, and then sacrificing to grab on to it. I think it will entertain and inspire you, and perhaps even give you a fresh perspective on an old faith.

>>The sentence of the priest precedes, and God subscribes to it. .”<<

How utterly blasphemous!

But whose writings were declared free from anything meriting censure by Pope Gregory XVL (1839) in the bull of his canonization.

Have been giving the whole issue of catholicism a great deal of thought and think maybe it might be better to define what a cult is. One of the earmarks is the members follow ‘a person’ or ‘entity’.......either in actual or imagined to appear as real... alive or of someone who has passed on.

As the supreme autocratic authority, who cannot be wrong when he definitely says he is right. .

Does catholicism fit this basic earmark having a Pope and Ministerial who determine the doctrines and what is or not permissible?..

Indeed, due to their presumption of assured infallibility, RCs look to an office as being perpetually infallible, and by extension the church possesses assured veracity, so that Divine revelation only surely consists of and means what she says it does.

For as often said, Rome has presumed to infallibly declare she is and will be perpetually infallible whenever she speaks in accordance with her infallibly defined (scope and subject-based) formula, which renders her declaration that she is infallible, to be infallible, as well as all else she accordingly declares.

While RCs make a pretense of treating Scriptural warrant as being the basis for the veracity of her doctrines, instead it is the premise of the assured veracity of Rome.

Thus when the fallacious nature of their arguments from Scripture fails, or even as a substitute for them, the RC invokes the "Catholic church gave you the Bible=she alone surely knows what it means" argument. Which, with its presuppositions, effectively invalidates the NT church.

Jesus Christ, His step-father Joseph, His mother Mary, all the Disciples including Peter, and virtually ALL of the first members of the Holy Catholic Church who were present on that particular Day of Pentecost (plus most if not all of the 3000 in Jerusalem who were converted and baptised that day)...were Jews.

Why does the RCC, including the Pontiffs in my lifetime, not support Jews and minister directly to Jews instead of to the enemies of Judah and Israel?

Why is support of the Jews not a significant part of RCC Holy Tradition?

Do you doubt God's ability to communicate with His chosen outside of your Catholic hierarchy
    I must confess
  1. I do not doubt God's ability to communicate. I doubt the willingness of men to hear, believe, and obey. There are many who think themselves chosen. And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment: And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. For many are called, but few are chosen.
  2. I believe in one holy catholic apostolic church. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

Is that what Catholics do?

Cynical Bear,

Don’t you have some photographs that can answer that question?

I think we are witnessing the gradual process by which the Catholic Church distanced itself from the truth of scripture in the meeting they currently have underway.

I read the Bible.

You posted a picture critical of “Right Wing Evangelicals.”

What have you been reading?

Evangelical followers of Jesus Christ believe these two points as well. The RCC, by itself alone, is not it.

You mean like the Catholic Church cuts out one verse and makes a hierarchy out of it? Or perhaps the one verse they use to construct their sinless goddess?

First of all Peter was there with them.

What are you implying? I know you know that Peter didn't perform the miracle.

Second, where did that translate to mutilation and desecration of human remains?

I thought we kiss and fondle the remains?

___

Look, on the one hand, there is the incorrupt body of Bernadette Soubirous:

OTOH, when St. Thomas Aquinas died...

Shortly after Thomas Aquinas died, on March 7, 1274, miracles began to occur near his body. The monks of the Cistercian abbey at Fossanova, where Thomas was buried, feared that the remains might be stolen and taken off to a Dominican resting place.

Jealous of their treasure, the Cistercians took macabre precautions. They “exhumed the corpse of Brother Thomas from its resting place, cut off the head and placed it in a hiding place in a corner of the chapel.” That way, if the corpse were taken, the head would still be theirs. His sister was given a hand, a finger of which was to take a grisly trajectory of its own.The reverent mutilations continued.

By the time the canonization process began in 1319, the corpse had been reduced to bones, from which the flesh had been boiled away. In 1396 the bones were moved to the Dominican monastery at Toulouse. The remains were relocated to the church of St. Sernin during the French Revolution, then returned to the monastery in 1974. They rest there today.

Wild and crazy story. But this isn't infallible Church dogma we're talking about. These represent the actions of imperfect yet pious, zealous Catholics of a different era.

Evey baptized person is anointed ---Catholics know this, or should --- with the oil that signifies a partaking of the offices of Christ: Priest, Prophet, King. Each within his or her own sphere of responsibility.

And one might point out that each and every one of us is a fully vested Temple of YHWH... Which would tend to negate the impositions many would try to point to... And as such, the granting of keys might be seen as 'all y'all' in a much grander scheme, rather that 'y'all' or 'you'...

Indeed the power to bind and loose, as it can be found in the will of Man, lies in our personal inherent right to ask forgiveness for ourselves and more so, for our debtors.
