NEWARK, N.J. On Oct. 4, at the Cathedral-Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, N.J., the first beatification ever held in the United States will take place, as Sister Miriam Teresa Demjanovich, a young Sister of Charity who died in the Garden State in 1927, will be formally raised to the altars.
In the history of the Church, 18 other men and women with U.S. ties have been beatified, with 12 of them proceeding on to canonization. But with the exception of St. Damien de Veuster, who was beatified in Brussels in 1995, all of their beatification and canonization ceremonies have taken place at the Vatican.
It will be a moment of special joy for the Church in the United States when Cardinal Angelo Amato, the prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, pronounces the formula never before heard on our shores, solemnly declaring Sister Miriam Teresa beata in the presence of a 1,800-strong crowd in Newarks stunning Gothic cathedral. The beatification ceremony will be broadcast live on EWTN at 9:30am Eastern Time.
The event is noteworthy, however, not just because it will be the first of what we hope will be many beatifications to take place in our country in the future. Every saint and blessed is proposed to the faithful as a model disciple and a proven intercessor, and Sister Miriam Teresa has much to teach us and much to suggest her as a potent and pertinent advocate before God.

She was an amazing woman. We are blessed to have had her in our faith.
Cool. I will try to watch that.
Pray that Bishop Fulton Sheen will soon follow.
I love those old hats.
She was so pretty.
Plus she went to college.
too bad her religious order is so left wing today.
Such a beautiful and holy person worthy of being a saint, which I hope will happen soon!!! I watched the mass on EWTN
I don't think she marched for climate change, lol
just as an FYI, coincidentally, Pope John Paul II walked down the same aisle on the same date in 1995, the Feast day of St. Francis!!! Also, there's a cute story behind making it a basilica. JPII told his aide or some other cardinal in the limo that he wants the church to be a basilica and his aide said, your holiness, I'll start working on it when we get back to Rome. JPII said, no you don't understand, it IS a basicilica...and it happened just like that by the Vicar of Christ on earth. See, the pope and the cardinals knew what the word IS is, our president at the time did not!
Oh, and this Cathedral is one of the more beautiful in the nation, much more beautiful than St. Patrick's Cathedral in NYC, IMHO, the marble at Sacred Heart is smooth and shiny too!! If you are ever in the area, I suggest that you see it. You'll be sorry if you didn't. You can take the PATH train from NYC into Newark. Then take a cab..
That picture reminds me of my grandparents’ house in Bayonne. My grandparents and the Demjanovic family came from adjacent villages in the “Old Country” (Slovakia). If they were alive, they would be so pleased with this blessed event.
