You're exactly right because that's what's wrong with Catholic theology.
They take one verse out of context and build on it: the papacy, the perpetual virginity of Mary, the immaculate conception, works based salvation, a priest having the ability to forgive someone else's sin, transubstantiation, apostolic succession, to name a few.
All based on one verse, usually very loosely translated.
That's why *Protestant* theology stands head and shoulders above Catholic theology. Because Scripture interprets Scripture and any Christian worth their salt demands multiple passages of Scripture to defend a belief, not just ONE verse.
Why is it that you cannot address the ISASUES involved and ALWAYS want to toss in a few bad apples?
We FR Protestants do NOT go chasing after shiny objects, but stay focused on the problem at hand.
You fret about throwing out names, but these are not ordinary names.
So selective; aren't you...
There is NO such thing as Protestant theology. 35,000 sects of them have littered the steers with Biblical chaos, the inevitable outcome of a denial of Petrine authority. Protestant “theology” or whatever is whenever any Protestant cracks open the Bible and runs with a scriptural quote from Jim Jones to Billy Graham to Joel Osteen and Rev. Wright making personal fortunes on the way. This is why there are now a slew of scholarly articles trying to explain why Bible Christians are so shallow.
Sound and act just like your pope.
Why of course! No such shallow nonsense as “born-again” drivel for Catholics.
We have Petrine Authority for our beliefs.
In the year 110 A.D., not even fifteen years after the book of Revelation was written, while on his way to execution St. Ignatius of Antioch wrote: Where the bishop is present, there let the congregation gather, just as where Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic church. The Church believes that when the bishops speak as teachers, Christ speaks; for he said to them: He who hears you, hears me; and he who rejects you, rejects me (Lk 10, 16).
St. Paul in his letters also warns the faithful to hold fast to the tradition they received: We command you, brothers, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, to avoid any brother who wanders from the straight path and does not follow the tradition you received from us (2 Th 3, 6).
It's too bad that Catholics call the teachings of Jesus himself *drivel*.
We have Petrine Authority for our beliefs.
We have Jesus' authority for our beliefs.
John 3:1-18 And there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night, and said to him: Rabbi, we know that thou art come a teacher from God; for no man can do these signs which thou dost, unless God be with him. Jesus answered, and said to him: Amen, amen I say to thee, unless a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Nicodemus saith to him: How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter a second time into his mother's womb, and be born again? Jesus answered: Amen, amen I say to thee, unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh, is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit, is spirit. Wonder not, that I said to thee, you must be born again. The Spirit breatheth where he will; and thou hearest his voice, but thou knowest not whence he cometh, and whither he goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
Nicodemus answered, and said to him: How can these things be done? Jesus answered, and said to him: Art thou a master in Israel, and knowest not these things? Amen, amen I say to thee, that we speak what we know, and we testify what we have seen, and you receive not our testimony. If I have spoken to you earthly things, and you believe not; how will you believe, if I shall speak to you heavenly things? And no man hath ascended into heaven, but he that descended from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him, may not perish; but may have life everlasting.
For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in him, may not perish, but may have life everlasting. For God sent not his Son into the world, to judge the world, but that the world may be saved by him. He that believeth in him is not judged. But he that doth not believe, is already judged: because he believeth not in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
St. Paul in his letters also warns the faithful to hold fast to the tradition they received: We command you, brothers, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, to avoid any brother who wanders from the straight path and does not follow the tradition you received from us (2 Th 3, 6).
So what traditions are those that Paul taught that the Catholic church neglected to include in Scripture when it allegedly wrote it?
How do you know?
How do you know theyre from the apostles, Paul in particular?
How do you know theyve been passed down faithfully?
What is your source for verifying all of the above?
Please provide the sources for verification purposes.
Those poor, POOR steers!
At least they are not plagued with the continuing list of bad actors.
True; they follow Roman Rules...
I'm sure then, you'll be first in line to congratulate him after the current synod brings in its fruit.
I can't believe you still trot out forged documents of Ignatius to defend your religion...
There you go again hanging onto floating snippets of scripture that separate from the bark. This is why Bible-Christians have become a source of inquisitive query from scholars on how this shallow group has been formed. As soon as they are forced into the deep end of the pool to defend “their” (read that as 35,000 sects) beliefs they drown.
No small wonder that dozens of serious Protestant theologians who taught, wrote books, and preached in colleges, foursquare etc finally ditched what they came to accept as a disjointed and fraudulent piece of nonsense.
In just under a decade, its now official “Protestant” theology of the scripture that allows for married gay and lesbian partners as among Lutherans, Unitarians, Presbyterians, Episcopalians, or the First AME “this or the First “that” or give it any name like “Emmanuel Church.”
On the other extreme we have all those vapid Chinese fortune-cookie encapsulations of scripture from Billy Graham to the Joel Osteen to Rick Warren with their silly stuff earning fortunes for themselves and their families.
This is the sheer rot including this born-again” rubbish embraced by the Oprah-Winfrey Bible Christians that renowned theologians sneer down. Sometimes, it is even deadly. Just ask the followers of David Joresh and Jim Jones.
This is exactly follows when street readers of scripture are given to lazy reading and deny Petrine authority.
Keep babbling.
I’ll read your stuff.
