Why is it wrong to ask Mary or the saints, all of whom are closest to Christ, to pray for the same?

Because we are told not to try to communicate with the dead.

Would John 3:16 in the KJV not apply to Mary?

Surely you would agree that the first person to believe in Christ would have everlasting life.
