Are Evangelicals Bad for Marriage?
National Review ^ | 07/25/2014 | Maggie Gallagher

Posted on 07/25/2014 4:31:45 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

An April 2014 Urban Institute study predicts that if current marriage rates do not rebound, just 69 percent of Millennial women (and 65 percent of men) will marry by the age of 40. By contrast, in 1990, 91 percent of U.S.-born women had married by the age of 40.

Almost none of this retreat from marriage will be felt among college-educated white Americans. The majority of college-educated Millennials will marry and have their children in marriages that last until the death of one partner.

Meanwhile, the average American lives in a world where sex is plentiful but stable families are not, leading many a Millennial to conclude that there is little point in marriage at all. You can’t fail at what you don’t attempt.

Into this explosive disruption of the time-tested path to opportunity for America’s next generation comes a new marriage debate: Are evangelicals bad for marriage?

This is akin to asking are catholics bad for conservatism in the US? Considering 56% voted for Obama in 2008; 50% in 2012; the northeast is majority catholic and they send liberal dimocrats to the sinate and house.

What is bad for marriage are liberal/progressives.
Welfare has virtually destroyed the black inner city family.
Why stick around to support a wife a kids if the government is going to pick up the tab?
The homosexual agenda? Can you say the destruction of society and with it marriage?
Yes the biggest threat to marriage is liberalism........

Isn’t it time to drop this Catholic VS Evangelical feud?

3/4 of the people we see everyday do not know JESUS. The harvest is ripe, the workers are few. THAT’S THE PROBLEM.

RE: Isn’t it time to drop this Catholic VS Evangelical feud?

The article never mentions any feud at all. If a feud starts, it will be because someone in this thread starts posting something touting his denomination and disparaging the other.

the mystique of sex has been excised from the minds of young people.

I commented yesterday about the sad plight of our less-than-motorhead boys because they are not introduced to the infernal combustion engine ... just blue tooth and the latest apps

The same is true in many other areas.

I've talked with my own kids (two living with partners and give me lip service about getting married) ..

Dad .. it's just not that important to us.

PS ... I should add ..

All children reared in a born again Baptist home ... basically good kids ... just don't go to church nor think marriage is important

I would agree with you but the article did point out a difference between religious affiliation and actual practice. Many of these North East Liberals are just Catholic by affiliation and don’t attend Mass. Or if they do, they’re just the Christmas and Easter types.

A married couple that attends Mass regularly is way more likely to be pro life, pro children, and conservative, even in Massachusetts. I’ve seen it. I have lots of Irish friends named Sullivan and Murphy that have 4 kids and attend Mass regularly. My sons get frustrated some times when they can’t play with their friends because these kids are at CCD.

And believe it or not, there are many families like mine that have 3 or more kids but no religious affiliation at all and still vote conservative in all issues.

Really? That's great, because the article's answer to the question, "Are Evangelicals bad for marriage?", amounts to, "No, it's a lot more complicated than that." ... As you would know, had you read more than the title.

This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

The conclusion from the study is: Average blue collar Americans, who remains largely somewhat Christian with minimal college education, are suffering horribly in the Obama economy and therefore marriages are falling apart for financial reasons.

If the assertion was true, then through all of America’s history up until now, the divorce rate would have been high.

Also, I would not consider these ‘open marriages’ that liberals are mentioned to have as actual marriages. If that’s a marriage then a pimp and his prostitute is a marriage.

And most of these marriages break up because the women are influenced by feminism and become hags like Hillary Clinton. That happens across the spectrum, which is why so many men are marrying foreigners.

Yes, please.

Trouble is, one side wants to keep it going.

The author's premise is fatally flawed ...

I supppose that next week he'll write an article claiming that Evangelical Christians are responsible for Malaria Outbreaks in Vermont ...

The article itself parses the study well, but needs mention of the feminism impacting ALL women regardless of income. That hurts marriage

It’s interesting how responses reflect the personal bugaboos of the poster, regardless of the content of the article.
