A network of evangelical Christian clubs is expanding to Portland-area public schools this year, and a coalition of residents is already rising against them.
The Good News Club has sparked fierce debate online since we published the story a week ago. This week, we're following up with a series of three Q&As.
The first featured Katherine Stewart, a journalist and author whose condemning book about the Good News Club sparked resistance to the club among Portlanders. The second offered John Luck, the program manager at Child Evangelism Fellowship who oversees the network of clubs, a chance to answer some challenging questions from readers.
Today, the final Q&A: David Fidanque, the executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon, answers legal questions.

The ACLU is a Marxist front group. So now its bad for there to be religious clubs at schools. These are church burners, folks. Give em a chance and they’ll take it.
When I was teaching school one of the local black ministers had a Christian club. This kept the kids busy as many had no place to go after school. The local ACLU raised holy hell about it and made a lot of trouble for the Principal. It was OK for the Black Panthers to have club, however.
If you can have queer, freak and pervert clubs in public schools, then christian clubs should help to balance it out.
I’ve had people ask me about what comes to mind when I think about Jesus Christ. The first thing is “love”. That is always the first thing I think of. I do not understand why people have any kind of issue with people that follow Jesus Christ. I don’t see anything wrong with love and I certainly don’t see anything wrong with Jesus Christ. And frankly, I don’t think the VAST majority of people in this country see any problem with Jesus Christ either. Why would they?

Why are these folks in Sacramento of all places?
I'm sure both of these clubs would be welcomed in.

very near and dear to my heart as i and friend phil started the bible club at my high school in 1967. i think we had to explain ourselves in the office. but after that it was a done deal.
Personally, I think parents should remove their children from the public schools. Regardless of that position, I support Christian influence within the public schools; and these clubs can be part of that influence.
