MOSCOW — At the height of the Cold War, it was common for American conservatives to label the officially atheist Soviet Union a “godless nation.”
More than two decades on, history has come full circle, as the Kremlin and its allies in the Russian Orthodox Church hurl the same allegation at the West.
“Many Euro-Atlantic countries have moved away from their roots, including Christian values,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a recent keynote speech. “Policies are being pursued that place on the same level a multi-child family and a same-sex partnership, a faith in God and a belief in Satan. This is the path to degradation.”
In his state of the nation address in mid-December, Mr. Putin also portrayed Russia as a staunch defender of “traditional values” against what he depicted as the morally bankrupt West. Social and religious conservatism, the former KGB officer insisted, is the only way to prevent the world from slipping into “chaotic darkness.”
As part of this defense of “Christian values,” Russia has adopted a law banning “homosexual propaganda” and another that makes it a criminal offense to “insult” the religious sensibilities of believers.
The law on religious sensibilities was adopted in the wake of a protest in Moscow’s largest cathedral by a female punk rock group against the Orthodox Church’s support of Mr. Putin. Kremlin-run television said the group’s “demonic” protest was funded by “some Americans.”

Yes China is still communist, but why did they permit free markets? Have you not seen their cities in pictures, they have high rise towers that would surprise you.
Not that there isn’t something to this, but if it was as black and white as this then wouldn’t the abortion rate reflect that? It doesn’t, yet. Russia has come waaaay down since the horrific 230+ abortions for every 100 live births in the early 90s, but it is still higher than the US, at least so far.
In any case I’m not sure any nation can proclaim itself civilized and Christian when the murder of unborn people is legal, and that includes both the US and Russia.

I've always understood that my mother's generation, brought up Russian Orthodox, were more connected to the spiratual. Some of my cousins, in fact, returned to the Orthodox faith of their parents.

Well, I certainly can’t argue with a fact. America is becoming a Godless, degenerate cesspool. Awash in a culture of homosex, dope and deviancy. No longer the country I spent my life pledging allegiance to.
Solzhenitsyn predicted, the West would fall apart once the Soviet Union fell.
I would submit something else is speaking through him. He and his comrades devote their lives to the communist cause and worked diligently to bring America to the point where we are. He then seems to be mocking us as “godless”. He’s done this before. While I agree that we are a nation that has lost faith in the God of our fathers, I reject his words as I would reject the words of a demon mocking someone who lost their faith.
I completely understand that China is now the world’s biggest exporter.
Bigger than America. Biggest anywhere.
What I am saying is that huge, increasingly assertive nation is COMMUNIST.
They are a closed society. Foreigners cannot participate, except as minorities.
Foreigners cannot buy land there.
China is a massive, closed society. Republicans need to bring American money back to America.
China is no longer developing. (well they are developing, but they are completely developed at the same time)
America needs to manufacture things.

The sad reality is that after 70+ years of godless Communism, the Russian people today are less rooted in their religious traditions than the West and therefore more vulnerable/sensitive to outside influences.
The Orthodox church in Russia deserves credit for sounding a warning about the expansion of a corrupt and decadent western culture, regardless which political figures co-opt the message.

Yes is is pretty incredible that the entire globe has sent money there, to build up a huge manufacturing nation.
I know China is huge. I know America is sold out.
That is what I am afraid of.
America needs to return American industry, right here.

I have to not agree with you, even those who mock, like it or not, often the Lord speaks to us.
What I am pointing out, is that China’s miracle economy is attained by a closed communist nation.
China is not America.
China is closed. Communist. China is now the world’s largest exporter.
China is winning.
We are helping them. American conservatives, are now on the side opposing America.
We are on the wrong side.
Ultimately we are responsible, I agree. But the process of ideological subversion and psychological warfare is powerful. It can only be defended against if a critical number of people targeted for subversion are AWARE of what is occurring. It’s similar to hypnosis or Neuro-linguistic programming. One is less likely to be influenced by such methods if they are aware of the process.
It was all that trade.
Great nations don’t allow foreign owned corporations to influence government policy.
