The *poor* who get free food (EBT), HEAP (help with heating costs), free medical care, free cell phones, etc ad nauseum?
I'm giving them enough stuff through the extortion called taxes.
Some clarification here. You are hearing and interpreting his message "locally". The pope is addressing a global audience. In many parts of the world, there are no social service programs for the disadvantaged. For example, in India, the indigent are tossed out on the street when they become too old or ill to be supported by their families. Think globally whenever the pope speaks.
It is amazing what tight families will do to avoid going on welfare. True story here. In November a good friend of our good friends passed away. She was 26 and died of ovarian cancer. Her husband died in an auto accident 2 years prior. She left a 2 yr old daughter. The grandmother quit her job to raise and care for the child. The grandfather I believe is deceased as well. That right there is a family in need. Many gladly donated money, clothes and trying to find low cost or volunteers to do day care so the grandmother can earn a salary.
There are real poor people and what can help them more is our time and our empathy. Government will just eat the money.
