SPRINGFIELD, IL, November 7, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – In its report Wednesday on the Illinois legislature’s passage of same-sex “marriage,” the Chicago Tribune cited two developments since May that helped the bill’s backers get the final votes they needed: the Supreme Court’s DOMA ruling and Pope Francis’ comments on homosexuality.
The paper quotes two Catholic state representatives who cited Pope Francis in explaining their decision to support the measure: Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia and House Speaker Michael Madigan. Madigan reportedly also secured between five and 10 additional votes to redefine marriage.
The papal comments at issue came in an interview with reporters in July on Pope Francis’ flight back from World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro. "If a person is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge him?" the pope said.
According to the Tribune, those comments “sparked a wave of soul-searching by several Catholic lawmakers who had battled to reconcile their religious beliefs with their sworn duty to represent their constituents who were increasingly supportive of gay rights even as Cardinal Francis George remained opposed.”
Rep. Chapa LaVia said: "As a Catholic follower of Jesus and the pope, Pope Francis, I am clear that our Catholic religious doctrine has at its core love, compassion and justice for all people.”
Speaker Madigan did not name the pope, but made a clear reference to his comments. "For those that just happen to be gay — living in a very harmonious, productive relationship but illegal — who am I to judge that they should be illegal?" he said.
The lawmakers’ comments are the latest in a campaign to twist the Pope’s remarks in recent interviews to support a progressive agenda opposed to Catholic moral teaching. The Pope has been clear, however, that he is a “son of the Church” and supports traditional Catholic teaching.
In his first encyclical, Lumen Fidei, released in July, Pope Francis reiterated the Church’s teaching that marriage is the union of one man and one woman.
As Cardinal Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 2009, the future Pope called homosexual “marriage” a “machination of the Father of Lies that seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God,” and “a destructive pretension against the plan of God.”
The Illinois same-sex “marriage” bill passed the House Tuesday in a vote of 61-54 and now heads to the desk of Governor Pat Quinn. Once he signs it into law, which he has promised to do, it will make Illinois the 15th state to enshrine same-sex “marriage.”
Ignore the encyclical, go with the comment, ping!
Typical Chicago maneuverings!
Yet another batch of leftists trying to re-create a Francis in their own image.
In the coming weeks, the Argentine people will face a situation whose outcome can seriously harm the family At stake is the identity and survival of the family: father, mother and children. At stake are the lives of many children who will be discriminated against in advance, and deprived of their human development given by a father and a mother and willed by God. At stake is the total rejection of Gods law engraved in our hearts.
Let us not be naive: this is not simply a political struggle, but it is an attempt to destroy Gods plan. It is not just a bill (a mere instrument) but a move of the father of lies who seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God.
…today the country, in this particular situation, needs the special assistance of the Holy Spirit to bring the light of truth on to the darkness of error, it need this advocate to defend us from being enchanted by many fallacies that are tried at all costs to justify this bill and to confuse and deceive the people of good will.
I thought that it was still questionable whether he ever supported civil unions however.
“...a follower of Jesus Christ and the pope?” Do they put their faith in something less than Jesus Christ?
I don’t get it
That typical of Chicago LOL!
Based on what? ... his "comments" on a flight to Rio that were spun by the msm to suit their agenda? He is the pope! He is all about marriage between a man and a woman. POPE FRANCIS AFFIRMS: MARRIAGE IS BETWEEN ONE MAN AND ONE WOMAN
According to “Project Vote Smart”, this Linda Chapa LaVia creature received a “100%” approval rating from Planned Parenthood in 2003 and 2005.
FWIW
Well, isn’t that just swell???? How convenient for them to twist Pope F’s words to justify their evil votes for abortions and for gay marriages.

I am not a Bible scholar, but isn’t there a passage in the Bible that mentions that The Devil does this sort of thing - that is, twists the words of holy sources to suit his own purposes?

...by softening its edge on some volatile social issues and altering its image as the party always seemingly "eager to go to war... We do need to expand the party and grow the party and that does mean that we don't always all agree on every issue" ... the party needs to become more welcoming to individuals who disagree with basic Republican doctrine on emotional social issues such as gay marriage... "We're going to have to be a little hands off on some of these issues ... and get people into the party," Paul said.
Lets start that conversation by acknowledging we arent going to deport 12 million illegal immigrants... bringing these workers out of the shadows and into being taxpaying members of society. Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers.12 million more people assimilating into society. 12 million more people being productive contributors. [but hes not in favor of amnesty, snicker, definition of is is]
The pope sent very mixed signals and took a conciliatory tone towards homosexuality, the media ran with it. Its his own fault and he can clear all this with two or three unambiguous sentences:
“Homosexuality is a grave sin, this includes both the act and the thought. A sin so terrible that nations that embraced it have been purged by holy fire in the past, that is God murdered man, woman, and child as punishment for cultural acceptance of homosexuality. Repentance is both possible and encouraged as with all sinners, those that do no repent will burn in hell for all eternity”.
Is that so hard?
Not good enough for you?:
In July 2009, he called on the priests of the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires to bring the faithful to an upcoming protest against homosexual “marriage.”
“Let’s not be naive, we’re not talking about a simple political battle; it is a destructive pretension against the plan of God,” wrote Cardinal Bergoglio in a letter sent to the monasteries of Buenos Aires. “We are not talking about a mere bill, but rather a machination of the Father of Lies that seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God.”
Click “like” if you want to defend true marriage.
To the clergy of the parishes, Bergoglio requested that all of them read from the pulpits a declaration defending the true definition and understanding of marriage.
I’m not referring to his most recent “Who am I to judge?” remarks. I thought there was a report when he first got elected that he made remarks that supported civil unions (vs gay marriage). It was refuted by one person, but that was all. At the time, I pointed to the refutation but I remember other Catholics (even on CAF) questioning it all. In other words, I don’t think the accusation was ever really resolved, but I am not 100% sure about it.
