Questions for "Bible Christians" that they can't answer - Part 2
Catholic Convert ^ | October 27, 2013 | David Palm and Steve Ray

Posted on 10/27/2013 5:25:55 AM PDT by NYer

There are 38 questions + a few bonus questions. I have split them into two separate posts of 20 and 18 + bonus questions. In case you missed it, here is the link to Part 1. Are you ready?

21. Who in the Church had the authority to determine which books belonged in the New Testament canon and to make this decision binding on all Christians? If nobody has this authority, then can I remove or add books to the canon on my own authority?

22. Why do Protestant scholars recognize the early Church councils at Hippo and Carthage as the first instances in which the New Testament canon was officially ratified, but ignore the fact that those same councils ratified the Old Testament canon used by the Catholic Church today but abandoned by Protestants at the Reformation?

23. Why do Protestants follow postapostolic Jewish decisions on the boundaries of the Old Testament canon, rather than the decision of the Church founded by Jesus Christ?

24. How were the bishops at Hippo and Carthage able to determine the correct canon of Scripture, in spite of the fact that they believed all the distinctively Catholic doctrines such as the apostolic succession of bishops, the sacrifice of the Mass, Christ’s Real Presence in the Eucharist, baptismal regeneration, etc?

25. If Christianity is a “book religion,” how did it flourish during the first 1500 years of Church history when the vast majority of people were illiterate?

26. How could the Apostle Thomas establish the church in India that survives to this day (and is now in communion with the Catholic Church) without leaving them with one word of New Testament Scripture?

27. If sola Scriptura is so solid and biblically based, why has there never been a full treatise written in its defense since the phrase was coined in the Reformation?

28. If Jesus intended for Christianity to be exclusively a “religion of the book,” why did He wait 1400 years before showing somebody how to build a printing press?

29. If the early Church believed in sola Scriptura, why do the creeds of the early Church always say “we believe in the Holy Catholic Church,” and not “we believe in Holy Scripture”?

30. If the Bible is as clear as Martin Luther claimed, why was he the first one to interpret it the way he did and why was he frustrated at the end of his life that “there are now as many doctrines as there are heads”?

31. The time interval between the Resurrection and the establishment of the New Testament canon in AD 382 is roughly the same as the interval between the arrival of the Mayflower in America and the present day. Therefore, since the early Christians had no defined New Testament for almost four hundred years, how did they practice sola Scriptura?

32. If the Bible is the only foundation and basis of Christian truth, why does the Bible itself say that the Church is the pillar and foundation of truth (1 Tim. 3:15)?

33. Jesus said that the unity of Christians would be objective evidence to the world that He had been sent by God (John 17:20-23). How can the world see an invisible "unity" that exists only in the hearts of believers?

34. If the unity of Christians was meant to convince the world that Jesus was sent by God, what does the ever-increasing fragmentation of Protestantism say to the world?

35. Hebrews 13:17 says, "Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you." What is the expiration date of this verse? When did it become okay not only to disobey the Church's leaders, but to rebel against them and set up rival churches?

36. The Koran explicitly claims divine inspiration, but the New Testament books do not. How do you know that the New Testament books are nevertheless inspired, but the Koran is not?

37. How does a Protestant know for sure what God thinks about moral issues such as abortion, masturbation, contraceptives, eugenics, euthanasia, etc.?

38. What is one to believe when one Protestant says infants should be baptized (e.g., Luther and Calvin) and another says it is wrong and unbiblical (e.g., Baptists and Evangelicals)?

A Few Bonus Questions

Where does the Bible . . .

. . . say God created the world/universe out of nothing?

. . . say salvation is attainable through faith alone?

. . . tell us how we know that the revelation of Jesus Christ ended with the death of the last Apostle?

. . . provide a list of the canonical books of the Old Testament?

. . . provide a list of the canonical books of the New Testament?

. . . explain the doctrine of the Trinity, or even use the word “Trinity”?

. . . tell us the name of the “beloved disciple”?

. . . inform us of the names of the authors of the Gospel of Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John?

. . . who wrote the Book of Acts?

. . . tell us the Holy Spirit is one of the three Persons of the Trinity?

. . . .tell us Jesus Christ was both fully God and fully man from the moment of conception (e.g. how do we know His Divinity wasn't infused later in His life?) and/or tells us Jesus Christ is One Person with two complete natures, human and Divine and not some other combination of the two natures (i.e., one or both being less than complete)?

. . . that the church should, or someday would be divided into competing and disagreeing denominations?

. . . that Protestants can have an invisible unity when Jesus expected a visible unity to be seen by the world (see John 17)?

. . . tell us Jesus Christ is of the same substance of Divinity as God the Father?

>> “all 4 gospels make it abundantly clear the women went around sunrise of Sunday.” <<

.
But Yeshua rose at the end of the 3rd day, which was by your pagan rekoning Saturday night.

>> “Any why would Jesus be embalmed?” <<

It is the standard that was observed for all Hebrews to apply aloes and wrapping to preserve the body. Did you expect them to roast his body for the Passover meal?

Yeshua was not convicted by the Sanhedrin, He was found innocent by Pilate “I find no fault with this man.”

Best example of blasphemy I can find is your prattle on this thread, which sounds much like the reasoning of the Serpent in the Garden. I leave you to your logical contradiction.

Creating Light automatically creates the lack thereof.

logic 101....the lack thereof exists, light is created....your soul did not eist until it was created....the universe did not exist before it was created....there is no anti-universe...

Who in the Church had the authority to determine which books belonged in the New Testament canon and to make this decision binding on all Christians? If nobody has this authority, then can I remove or add books to the canon on my own authority?

“You have to understand that the canon was not the result of a series of contests involving church politics. The canon is rather the separation that came about because of the intuitive insight of Christian believers. They could hear the Good Shepherd in the Gospel of John; they could hear it only muffled and distorted way in the Gospel of Thomas mixed in with a lot of other things.

“When the pronouncement was made about the canon, it merely ratified what the general sensitivity of the church had already determined. You see, the canon is a list of authoritative books more than it is an authoritative list of books. These documents didn’t derive their authority from being selected; each one was authoritative before anyone gathered them together. The early church merely listened and sensed that these were authoritative accounts.

“For somebody now to say that the canon emerged only after councils and synods made these pronouncements would be like saying, ‘Let’s get several academies of musicians to make a pronouncement that the music of Bach and Beethoven is wonderful.’ I would say, ‘Thank you for nothing! We knew it because of sensitivity to what is good music and what is not. The same with the canon.” Dr. Bruce M. Metzger, Ph.D.

Yehova has no “Friday,” or “Sunday.”

sure He has....God created day and night...He gave man the authority to name them....man named them sunday through Saturday, see how God's authority works....we even get to name the animals that He created, and the plants, and the insects, and the denominations....

No, Yehova did not give man any authority to name days, He reserved that to himself. He numbered them.

Only the followers of Satan have named days.

All the names of days are evil pagan names, fitting for catholics.

The lack of something that doesn’t exist doesn’t exist either.

Fail Logic 101.

It appears the Lord Jesus Christ set the Canon for the Old Testament in Luke 24:44 long before the Roman Catholic.

Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,

The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2001). (Lk 24:44–45). Wheaton: Standard Bible Society.

Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,

Now the RCC wants to 'open' our minds to 'understand' the Magisterium's pronouncements.

Yes; I do doubt the claims made by certain Catholics on this thread.

One wonders why they seem unable to make their case.

< I>All 4 Gospels make it clear the crucifixion was done on Friday.

I seem to recall Jesus saying, "For even as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. " [Jon 1:17.]

I'm an ignorant evangelical and never could add or subtract accurately, but I believe the very words of Jesus. When I count backwards three days and three nights from Sunday morning I end up with Thursday. Please tell me how Jesus got it wrong?

Oh, we do understand, they are the pronouncements of Babylon, and the key to the broad gate that leads to the “Second Death.”

>> “All 4 Gospels make it clear the crucifixion was done on Friday” <<

.
No part of Yehova’s word says anything happens on any pagan named day, and especially on “Friday,” or “Sunday,” which are specifically dedicated to pagan worship.

>> “When I count backwards three days and three nights from Sunday morning I end up with Thursday. Please tell me how Jesus got it wrong?” <<

.
Yeshua didn’t rise on “Sunday,” he arose at the end of the 3rd day, “on the first day of the week,” Which happened at sundown, (”saturday night”) to which every mention of “the first day of the week” refers, not at sunrise, when all pagan sungod worshipers worship.

We are ordered to “come out” of Babylon (the Whore and her daughters), when are you coming?

And you are in danger of committing the unpardonable sin.

All of you seem to be latching on to one text "Three days and three nights..... And ignoring that the term "Day and night" is an idiom. I gave you a place to verify the truth I have told you.

Also you may feel free to call the days anything you like. Enough of the gospels refer to "First day", "second day", " last day" etc.. to prove my point.

I have done all I can to give you the truth, the rest is up to the Holy Spirit.

ES perhaps you have forgotten that I did leave the Catholic Church, and reading/ studying the scriptures is what brought me back.

Absolute nonsense!

You have to equate the pharisee’s demonic oral torah with Yehova’s real Torah to even get close to your nonsensical idea.

The three days and nights are the fact of reality, and also the words of Yeshua, as he invoked the time Jonah spent in the belly of the sea creature.

Did Jonah spend three idioms in the belly of the sea creature? IOW, is Yeshua really a scoundrel and a liar?

That is what he would have to be for your idea to be right.

Had you really left the Whore of Babylon and gone to Yeshua, you never would have gone back.

If I believed that you had any idea what the “unpardonable sin” really is, I would be very concerned for you, but I will pass on your snark, and repeat my invitation to leave the daughter of Babylon that has you ensnared, because I recognize that you do have a heart for the truth, but have so far failed to latch onto it.

Where is the “idiom?”

Matthew 12:

[39] But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:
[40] For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Do you have sufficient grasp of language to understand the use of "as" and "so?"
