PCUSA Rejects Hymn “In Christ Alone”

Timothy George reports the PCUSA Presbyterian Committee on Congregational Song voted against including the popular hymn “In Christ Alone” from their latest hymnal. He writes:

Recently, the wrath of God became a point of controversy in the decision of the Presbyterian Committee on Congregational Song to exclude from its new hymnal the much-loved song “In Christ Alone” by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend. The Committee wanted to include this song because it is being sung in many churches, Presbyterian and otherwise, but they could not abide this line from the third stanza: “Till on that cross as Jesus died/the wrath of God was satisfied.” For this they wanted to substitute: “…as Jesus died/the love of God was magnified.” The authors of the hymn insisted on the original wording, and the Committee voted nine to six that “In Christ Alone” would not be among the eight hundred or so items in their new hymnal.

Morgana:
“A God without wrath brought men without sin into a Kingdom without judgment through the ministrations of a Christ without a Cross.” (H. Richard Niebuhr)
is the theology of those who control the PCUSA.

If you attend a PCUSA church, no matter how sound that individual congregation is....you are tacitly supporting the apostasy controling the larger denomination.

Not a lot of time left to be messing with that sort of thing.

Although the Methodist hymnal, which was revised in 1989, added some good hymns such as Robert Lowry’s “Shall We Gather at the River?” that were not in previous editions, it excluded a number of favorites such as “Eternal Father, Strong to Save” and added politically correct lyrics to others—”God of Our Fathers” is now “God of the Ages,” and “Good Christian Men Rejoice” is now “Good Christian Friends Rejoice.”

Another reason to leave this “church” of Satan, in addition to their alliance with headcutters against Israel.

I don't understand this one at all.

I know people who have an aversion to "Amazing Grace" for similar reasons.

When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found;
In Him, my righteousness, alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.

Hey, you should see the difference between the latest Blue book and the old Red one.

We kept the Red ones next to the Blue ones because all the songs we liked the best were in the Red one.

PCUSA going PC as fast as it can.

Here’s the lyrics of the song... which one do they object to?

_______________________________________

In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm

What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless Babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save

‘Til on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live, I live

There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again

And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From a life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny

No power of hell, no scheme of man
Could ever pluck me from His hand
‘Til He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I stand

I will stand, I will stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground, all other ground
Is sinking sand, is sinking sand
So I stand

Diminishing the reality of sin and its ramifications in the world not only ignores the important thing like REALITY. It also detracts from the importance of the crucifixion.

You cannot have an understanding of salvation if you do not accept the reality of sin.

Like I said I have no clue. I’m not a member of this church so I have no idea what is going on in their heads.

The PCUSA is apostate, plain and simple.

However, just to be fair... not all conservative, (otherwise)orthodox Christians accept the biblical idea that Jesus satisfied the wrath of God against Man’s sin on calvary. Some, see Jesus death as an ultimate example of selflessness...or, a declaration of victory over sin and the devil (Eastern Orthodox), or Jesus life paying a ransom to free us.... or any of a number of things.

Penal substitutionary atonement is, after all, not the ONLY thing Jesus did on the cross—however, I agree, it is the key legal/forensic work Jesus accomplished there—along with a lot of other things—as the cross was the ultimate human (and divine) achievement, and is of a very mysterious nature.

How do they explain this verse?

“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life; but he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him” (John 3:36).

Also, if this particular line is offensive to them, all they need to do is CHANGE the lyrics.
