...I’ve always found it impossible to understand how you can be a lib AND a Christian.

My cousin falls into this category. I see 2 things in his case. He doesn't read, or study Scripture. He thinks his "good works" earn him salvation.

Well maybe your cousin isn’t born again because Ephesians 2:8-9 clearly speak AGAINST belief in Christ as a work that we can earn.
