WHY ARE OUR CATHOLIC LAITY SO ILLITERATE WHEN IT COMES TO THE CATHOLIC FAITH
Southern Orders ^ | May 31, 2013 | Fr. Allan J. McDonald

WHY ARE OUR CATHOLIC LAITY SO ILLITERATE WHEN IT COMES TO THE CATHOLIC FAITH--BLAME THE TEXT BOOKS, BLAME THE TEACHING METHODS AND BLAME THE PARENTS, BUT BLAME THE BISHOPS, PRIESTS AND CATECHISTS TOO, BLAME EVERYONE INCLUDING SATAN, EXCEPT NO ONE TEACHES ABOUT HIM ANYMORE OTHER THAN POPE FRANCIS, DON'T BLAME HIM!

Do our Catholic children and most adults know what these images teach?

All of us know one of the elephants in the room of the Catholic Church. Our religious education programs are not handing on the essence of our Catholic Faith, our parents are befuddled about their role in handing on the faith and the materials we use are vapid or if good do not make an impression on young minds. We are afraid of asking for memorization and thus most don't remember anything they've learned about God and Church other than some niceties and feel good emotions.

I teach each class of our grades 1-6 (we don't have 7th or 8th) each Thursday, rotating classes from week to week. For the last two years I have used Baltimore Catechism #1 as my text book. It is wonderful to use with children and it is so simple yet has so much content. If Catholics, all Catholics, simply studied Baltimore Catechism #1, we would have very knowledgeable Catholics.

These past two years I've used Baltimore Catechism #2 with our adult religious program which we call Coffee and Conversation following our 9:30 AM Sunday Mass, which coincides with our CCD program which we call PREP (Parish Religious Education Program).

This #2 book has more content and is for middle school, but upper elementary school children must have been more capable of more serious content back when this book was formulated and used through the mid 1960's because it is a great book to use with adults and not childish at all. We all use this same book as a supplemental book for the RCIA because it is so clear, nobly simple and chocked full of content!

Yes, there are some adjustments that need to be made to some chapters, but not that many, in light of Vatican II and the new emphasis we have on certain aspects of Church that are not present in the Baltimore Catechism. But these are really minor.

What is more important though is that when the Baltimore Catechism was used through the mid 1960's it was basically the only book that was used for children in elementary and junior high school. It was used across the board in the USA thus uniting all Catholics in learning the same content. There was not, in other words, a cottage industry of competing publishing houses selling new books and different content each year.

The same thing has occurred with liturgical music, a cottage industry of big bucks has developed around the sale of new hymnals, missalettes and new music put on the open market for parishes to purchase. It is a money making scheme.

Why do our bishop allow this to happen in both liturgical music and parish catechesis? The business of selling stuff to parishes and making mega bucks off of it is a scandal that has not be addressed.

In the meantime, our liturgies suffer and become fragmented because every parish uses a different resource for liturgical music and the same is true of religious formation, everyone uses something different of differing quality or no quality at all.

Isn't it time to wake up and move forward with tried and true practices that were tossed out in favor of a consumerist's approach to our faith that has weakened our liturgies, our parishes and our individual Catholics?

Were you to attempt to try this in any court of relevance you would be disqualified for lack of standing.

Mary was sinless because God preserved her from sin.

Have you met Natural Law??

Where does scripture say this?

It's right near the verse that says, "Mary was sinless because God preserved her from sin."

That would be the only court of competency and relevance. I chose not to comment on the balance of your opinions because they don't merit a response.

I get we'll need one of these for our RCC friends:

Gabriel said she was “full of grace”.”

I thought only SINNERS NEEDED the GRACE of GOD?

Grace, faith, works, belief, being born from above, and baptism are among a few of the many ways mentioned in Scripture.

John 6:28-29

Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”

Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

1 John 3:21-24

Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him. And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

No, but I feel compelled to try.

That's why I post SCRIPOTURE.

We PROTESTants (and seekers) have to make up our minds if it's, 1, true, and 2, if it's worth believeing.

Catholics apparently do NOT have to make these hard DECISIONS.

Jesus said “THIS IS MY BODY” and “THIS IS MY BLOOD”.

HE also said:

Get thee behind me, Satan."

(Not an auspicious start for the 'First Pope'.)

When Jesus says his Father and He are one, what does your cult make of it? How do they spin it?

I'm not in a cult

Sure. Pull this leg and it plays Jingle Bells.

but not only is Jesus and the Father one but the Holy Spirit is included in the Trio...

Trio? You are comparing Almighty God to Rush or Triumph or Motorhead?

So who was Jesus praying to???

Didn't He say? What does your cult-approved Scripture tell you? C'mon. We'll see if it corresponds with Christian Scripture.

Self Alone folks claim that God Almighty is restrained by time and couldn't apply the sacrifice of His Son to Mary at the time of her conception.

Correct. They apply their own constraints to God and demand that He adhere to them.

They also claim that their sins were all in the future when Christ was crucified but are forgiven when they accept Christ which proves their heresy of Once Saved Always Saved because all their sins are forgiven in advance once they say the magic words. Like Luther, they insist that they are in fact free to commit murder a thousand times a day and it makes no difference whatsoever.

They consider themselves double 0 - naught. Licence to sin.

It logically flows from that combination of arguments that they believe God Almighty could not apply to the mother of His own Son exactly the same degree of ignoring time as we know it that He applies to them.

To them, God is limited to what they are limited to.

That's way beyond odd, it's another perfect example of a strong delusion in action.

Not sure of delusion, but surely a strong example of wanting something to exist very very strongly.

Hello.....The sin nature comes through the father.

I've seen this before. Where does it come from?

Somehow, claiming to be a former Catholics gains some street cred in some circles.

While admitting that one is one currently is supposed to gain cred with GOD.

Those quotes don’t say anything about Jesus being born to a sinful human.

Or being assisted by a sinful midwife; either.

So, you think the Bible is supposed to be an exhaustive source of all religious truth?

Of COURSE!!

Rome made SURE that all that was needed was combined into it.

(At least that's what I've heard...)

Petrosius: But if you think you can find another Catholic liturgical book [emphasis by Elsie] where we worship Mary, go ahead.

Elsei: Are these the ONLY places I get to look?

The Catholic Church is a highly liturgical one and our worship is regulated by official books. Where else would you look?

The man. You know, those one’s who are the fathers.

Sin came through Adam. I posted the Scripture upthread.

Men are supposed to be the spiritual leaders in the home. It’s their responsibility. Eve was deceived, not Adam.

Adam, wonderful husband that he was, watched the dialogue between Eve and the serpent and watched her eat. He didn’t intervene even though HE knew better.
