I’m coming to this thread very late, but I don’t see any reason to zot the poster.

It’s discouraging to me that the religion forum has so many pretty repetitive fights between Protestants and Catholics, when it would be better if conservative Protestants and Catholics could get together and fight the real enemies who are destroying our country, and agree to disagree among themselves.

I’m not an admirer of Luther, whose works I have studied in some detail, but I’m not sure that there’s much point in attacking him in FR. I’ll just say now that I think there were serious problems in the Church leadership in Luther’s time, but that splitting the Church into fragments and provoking civil wars throughout Europe for the next couple of hundred years—even getting some Christians joining with the Mohammedans to fight against their former brethren—was not a very helpful solution to those problems. The papacy was reformed by the end of the sixteenth century, but the religious divisions Luther provoked have undermined Christian civilization ever since.

Nevertheless, I would guess that there are about fifty threads attacking the Catholic Church here in FR for every thread attacking the Reformation. Why is this thread any worse than most of those others, aside from the fact that the poster seems to be a recent Freeper? What he says about Luther is no worse, IMHO, than what certain other Freepers say daily about the Catholic Church and the Pope. And some of them seem to have no other purpose for being here. Well, that’s their right, I guess. So, why not his?

Cicero, if being critical of the Roman church by freepers makes you uncomfortable, might I suggest you try defending protestantism at http://forums.catholic.com/

Hear Hear!!

Calling the OP “flamebait” is comical, in light of what gets posted and replied to here. The OP does not merit a zot.

It’s like the poster is actually a Catholic-bashing agent provocateur. Vitriol to the point of mental illness is far more likely to originate from fringe groups or those who fancy themselves prophets.

There are mostly threads that don't attack anyone unless you have some sort of theological dispute ~ the history cites where we are looking at who burned who with what and where are pretty much hard core factoids with which there can be little disagreement.

Theological disputes come in all forms ~ my own church argues that it recreated the First Century Church ~ which was located in Jerusalem. The original was pretty much wiped out in 70 AD with the destruction of the city, which resulted in all sorts of things ~ but aside from history, the original body is believed to be reflected in the New Testament to a better extent than the successor bodies. One well known religious organization reflects back on the events of that First Century church to argue on behalf of its own orthodoxy ~ pointing first to the comments of, to, by, about St. Peter ~ before he was a Saint mind you ~ about what he was up to.

Most Protestants in our time remain blissfully unaware of all of that ~ because there are bears in the woods, lions resting on our lawns, and thieves breaking in through the roof ~ and we must tend to that first.

We are all on the same side, going all huggy buggies in the upper room trying to get away from it all and counting our ammunition, and who thought to bring some artillery this time ~ these stupid swords just won't do the job! So, quit poking me as your jerk around trying to hide under the table.

That sir is absurd. There is far more Catholic posting attacking the Reformation than otherwise, unless started by Catholics. I have never seen you post on any of the multitudinous RF threads advertising and promoting Roman Catholicism ( search site:www.freerepublic.com pope for instance), and upholding it as the one true church, and in which are many RCs often contending for that and against anything that in anyways impugns upon that claim. One who advertise an entity which makes an extreme claim, expect challenges rather than expressing a victim mentality.

In contrast, relatively rare indeed are threads started by Reformation type posters attacking RC.
