why would it not be proper to ask St, Peter, St paul et.al. to pray for us.

There is a good reason to NOT do that. That was not the example of how Jesus taught the disciples to pray. Ever hear "Our Father who art in Heaven . . "? Jesus is our Example. We pray to God and nobody else. So when God asks you at the Judgement "You prayed to who???" You won't be ashamed.
