Recently, the Archdiocese of San Francisco, perhaps at the instigation of its incoming archbishop, Salvatore Cordileone, denied permission for drag queens to emcee at charity events in the community hall of Most Holy Redeemer, a Roman Catholic church in the Castro district.
That prompted this letter to me from the Rev. Robert Warren Cromey, who will identify himself in the letter:
"When I was rector of Trinity Episcopal in the late nineteen nineties, I conducted at least five funerals of drag queens in the church. They were usually held on Saturday afternoons. Neighbors' heads would lean out the windows in amazement as limos and motorized Cable Cars would pull up to the church and exquisitely dressed drag queens and their entourages would emerge and proceed quietly and respectfully into the cavernous Trinity Church.
"Usually about four hundred people showed up to participate in the memorial service for one of the departed queens. The music was tasteful and traditional, 'Amazing Grace' and 'Till We Meet Again' were popular. Eulogies giving thanks for the lives of the departed, hilarious stories of some escapades and tender tales of ministering to dying AIDS patients. I always preached a sermon on death and new life. There were prayers for the departed and his family. The procession out of the church was sung to 'God Save Our Nellie Queen' with Empress Jose Saria bringing up the rear.
"The church received a generous gift of money by the families and friends of the departed. I saw that welcoming these queens was just part of the ministry of the church."
Would that the Catholic Church had the same view. It seems that Cordileone, known to be extremely conservative, believes he has come to San Francisco to clean up the gay rot.

What?? never mind
Those nice big contributions, eh ...
That's all you need to know
By definition, drag queens are gay. Why is this clown demanding the church honor gays?
Frankly, he sounds like a repressed tranny-chaser.
Drag queen my rear end. If you ever saw these men dressed in drag they would shock the S out of you. First you think they are just a homely woman. Then you think they are a woman who dressed while loaded on drugs. Then when they get close you realize it is a double ugly dude wearing his grandmothers clothes.
Lol. I’ve seen it all - I’m trans.
“Those nice big contributions, eh ...” - I suspect that when it is all said and done - Cardinal Dolan’s inviting 0bamba to the Al Smith memorial dinner had the same motivation - ‘social justice’ pays pretty well but only if the government doesn’t shut off the tap! It’s a shame.
I wouldn’t bet my eternal soul on that.
Maybe he's coming out of the
There is virtually no church discipline exercised. There is no discernment, no repudiation; only complicity with evil.
I ask you to re-read the story. The author is Episcopalian (Protestant) and former rector of Trinity Episcopal (not Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church) who had permitted the drag queens funerals. He wrote in protest of Archbishop Cordeleone refusal to permit drag queens to use the church hall at Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church for social and fund raising functions. It seems that in your haste to criticize the Catholic Church you inadvertently shot yourself in the foot.
Peace be with you
may that final parachute safely open, amen
But my condemnation of the Catholic Church stands. It allows and enables this level of behavior in other areas, with little or no effective repudiation. Catholic universities are a prime example. The recent incident of a priest being censured and suspended for refusing to give communion to an open, unrepentant lesbian is another.
Tell you what, Cunningham, wake me up the next time the Catholic hierarchy excommunicates, or even censures, a heretical politician or other high profile professor to Catholicism. I’m sure I’ll sleep solidly.
Read the history of the church and you will find that from the beginning she has been plagued by heretics and evil doers. Judas was only the first of many. But that’s no reason to dismiss the Church that Jesus founded. Unless yoou think that he founded a different one, which He didn’t.
Since you have thrown the first stone, tell us how without sin and error you and the members and clergy of your church are.
Peace be with you.
