as described before ad-nauseum, the Pope as a person not ex-cathedra is not infallible, so as a human being he can make errors. However, God's grace through the poewr of the Holy Spirit protects the sub-shepherd of Christ when he defines a doctrine of faith
This is not because, rather it is INSPITE of the person who is the bishop of Rome at that time. Nothing else but the power of the Holy Spirit explains this continuation.
