What I have been told is that Godparents were essential for two reasons. They assisted in the Catholic upbringing of the child AND the godmother usually held the baby (in the olden days, many of the Moms sat in a pew because they were still not healed from delivery). If parents could take the classes before the birth, that would help. If the parents could schedule the Baptism before the birth, that would help as well. You have your due date and most doctors will not let you go over two weeks past that. So, an earlier Baptism is possible. IMHO.
