Top 5 faith & culture stories: Should Christians vote for a Mormon?
Denison Forum on Truth and Culture ^ | Dec. 28, 2011 | Jim Denison

Posted on 12/31/2011 8:49:24 AM PST by Colofornian

Time magazine says the #1 religion story of the year is the rise of Mormonism. Two Mormons are running for president; Glenn Beck's commitment to the Mormon church made headlines; .

As we continue our series on my top 5 faith and culture stories of 2011, let's ask today: Is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints a cult? Can Christians vote for a Mormon candidate? What does the mainstreaming of Mormonism say about our culture? The answers to these questions will take more space than my typical essay--I hope the following information is helpful.

If by "cult" we mean the popular caricature of a manipulative group that practices mind control and exploits its members, the Mormon church clearly does not qualify. However, scholars use the word differently. According to Walter Martin's definitive The Rise of the Cults, a "cult" by definition claims a founder other than Jesus, follows a book other than the Bible, accepts beliefs that are outside orthodox Christianity, and seeks salvation in ways other than by grace through faith.

How do Mormon beliefs stack up against this definition?

There is no question that Mormons claim to be Christians. But what do they believe about God? Their movement was founded 1800 years after Christ by Joseph Smith (1805-44). He taught that "God was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heaven" (Doctrine and Covenants 130:22). His physical intercourse with Mary resulted in the conception of the physical Christ (Journal of Discourses 1:51; 4:218).

Do Mormons follow a book other than the Bible? In addition to Scripture, they consider the Book of Mormon to be "another testament of Jesus Christ" revealed by Jesus to descendants of Israel living in early America. They also follow Doctrine and Covenants and Pearl of Great Price, compendiums of theology and prescribed practices.

Do they accept beliefs outside orthodox Christianity? Smith taught plural marriage as a "new and everlasting covenant" (Doctrine and Covenants 132:1,4), though the church repudiated polygamy in 1890. They baptize for the dead, believing that this action can speed the progress of the deceased in the afterlife.

Do they seek salvation in ways other than by grace through faith? Mormons believe that baptism purges their Gentile blood and replaces it with the blood of Abraham through the Holy Spirit. In this way they become the actual offspring of Abraham (History of the Church 3:380). They believe in three levels of glory: the telestial kingdom (for those who have no testimony of Christ); the terrestrial kingdom (for those who fail the requirements of exaltation); and the celestial kingdom (reserved for members of the Mormon church who will become "gods"; Doctrine and Covenants 132:20).

Are Mormons Christians? That depends on the degree to which they accept the non-biblical teachings of their faith regarding God and salvation. I have known Mormons who assured me that they have asked the Lord Jesus Christ to forgive their sins and become their personal Savior and Lord. Many Mormons I have met do not know the doctrines of their church I have discussed today. However, I have also met Mormons who believe that their progress toward the celestial kingdom depends not on Jesus' sacrifice but on their missionary work and other church activities.

Should the Mormon beliefs of Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman influence Christians as they decide which presidential candidate to support? Our decision should be informed by our answers to two questions. First, to what extent do Romney and Huntsman accept the non-Christian elements of their faith? Second, to what degree would decisions made by the president be impacted by uniquely Mormon beliefs?

What does the mainstreaming of Mormonism say about America? "Pluralism" is the belief that many religions lead to God. According to a recent survey, two-thirds of evangelicals under the age of 35 believe non-Christians can go to heaven, even though Jesus clearly said, "No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6).

I predict that we'll see an escalation of pluralism in the new year as our culture's rejection of absolutes becomes even more pervasive. But just as all roads don't lead to Dallas, all roads don't lead to heaven. Are you on the right one? Are you praying for someone who isn't?

Is that the Job of a Christian???

Romans 15:4
For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

Romans 16:17
I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them.

1 Corinthians 4:17
For this reason I am sending to you Timothy, my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church.

1 Corinthians 11:2
 2.  I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the teachings,  just as I passed them on to you.

Ephesians 4:14-15
 14.  Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming.
 15.  Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ.

2 Thessalonians 2:15
So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the teachings  we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.

2 Thessalonians 3:6
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers, to keep away from every brother who is idle and does not live according to the teaching  you received from us.

1 Timothy 1:3-4
 3.  As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer
 4.  nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. These promote controversies rather than God's work--which is by faith.

1 Timothy 1:7
They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.

1 Timothy 2:7
And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle--I am telling the truth, I am not lying--and a teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles.

1 Timothy 4:1-2
 1.  The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.
 2.  Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.

1 Timothy 4:6
If you point these things out to the brothers, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, brought up in the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed.

1 Timothy 4:11
  Command and teach these things.

1 Timothy 6:3-5
 3.  If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching,
 4.  he is conceited and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions
 5.  and constant friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.

2 Timothy 1:13
What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus.

 2 Timothy 2:15-17
 15.  Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.
 16.  Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly.
 17.  Their teaching will spread like gangrene.

2 Timothy 3:16-17
 16.  All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,
 17.  so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

 2 Timothy 4:3-4
  3.  For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.
  4.  They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

Titus 1:11
They must be silenced, because they are ruining whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach--and that for the sake of dishonest gain.

Titus 2:1
You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine.

Titus 2:15
These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you.

 Hebrews 13:9
Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings.

 2 Peter 2:1-3
 1.  But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them--bringing swift destruction on themselves.
 2.  Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute.
 3.  In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.

2 John 1:10
If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take him into your house or welcome him.

Or is it to be a reflection of Jesus Christ, sharing the Good News and letting GOD judge the heart’s of other’s?

Sorry; but MORMONs have made their claim: they are the ONLY true christians - all others are posers.

Therefore; if they want to be IN the church so bad; then they'll have to accept certain things the BIBLE teaches about being in the CHURCH; right??

1 Corinthians 5:12-13

12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? 13 God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”

So...You love your neighbor, only if your neighbor fits into your idea of what Christianity is?

You cannot convert anyone, you can share the Good News with other’s and let GOD do the rest....

Jesus never ever got into a theological debate with the Pharisees, vs. the Essenes vs. the Samaritans..

What he did was show all of them that each and every one of them, were guilty of breaking the laws of GOD...

He exposed hypocrites and moneychangers and liars and everyone that did not know the love of GOD...

Many christians today are falling into snares and traps and Jesus warned all of us that this would happen in the latter days...

The letter to the 7 Churches I think is very prevalent today for the Church to read and ponder on...

I am not a fan of Mitt Romney, but it has nothing to do with him being a Mormon, what if he was Jewish???

If he were Jewish; I highly doubt he'd say that he was a Christian.

I am not a fan of Mitt Romney.
Part of it has SOMEthing to do with him being a Mormon.

Look at it this way....

1. Mormon’s

2. Jehovah Witness

3. Catholics

4. Methodists

5. Seventh Day Adventist

6. Baptists

7. Protestants

8. Episcopalians

9. Nazarites

10. Assembly of GOD

Just to name a few...Which way of worship is correct????

Many Christians do not believe in the *Trinity*

How are you going to correct these people who adhere to thier belief system?

Maybe that is why Jesus said... (2 Greatest Commandments)
Love GOD with all your heart, mind and soul and love your neighbor as yourself, so people would not get into these theological debates with other christians.... That might cause a *rift*

Is this not what I am doing about MORMONism?

Like you have never forgot to ping someone or made a statement in passing that you didn’t ping them to.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

My posting history will show that when that has happened ( very rare) that I issue an immediate and sincere apology.

I don't see an apology here.

How very two-faced of you. Was gossip the issue at hand? Yet you keep harping in that venue. Yet when another, more relevant issue regarding your MormonISM is raised, you run behind the ‘that's not the issue of this thread’ whine glass. Here's a hint for you, child: You have no creds on this forum since you've exposed your immaturity and deceit for all to read. Have Nice Day

I don’t know are you?

I think those false prophets expose themselves from the
Jim Baker’s to the Ted Haggarty’s and to all the other Preachers that have a message of”

* Do what I say, don’t do as I do*

I respect the Mormon’s for there fight for Traditional Marriage, thier family values, and what they believe theologically will be handled by Jesus Christ....

If they don't believe in the Trinity - they are not Christians.

Yet, again - WHAT gossip. There was nothing in those statements that comes close to gossip.
I have an idea, deal with issues at hand, you asked questions, there were answered, you fluffed them off, asked more questions, more fluffing, you asked more questions, then made accusations, now are complaining your feelings are hurt..what you are pointing out is that you are apparently unable or unwilling to deal with the questions you have asked and that have been answered. For a reason known only to you, you defend mormonISM with a fervor.....why is that?

I pointed out that one of the references cited did **not** mention anything at all about Mary and the other said absolutely nothing about intercourse with Mary. Then I did the most minimal Google search and I found that the Book of Mormon states that Mary was a virgin when she conceived ( virgins don't conceive and haven't had intercourse) and that it was by the power of the Holy Ghost overshaddowing her.

Then I get **tons** of posts with the posters claiming that these post “imply** intercourse ( none do). So far NOT EVEN ONE reference has stated that Mary had intercourse with God the Father.

Then because I point out the above in your **mind** (only) I have to be a Mormon who lives in Salt Lake City. Geeze! Joseph Smith wasn't the only one with wild imaginings.

Who is being immature here? Who is whining?

By the way, Romney is slicker than snot.

You know MHG, it is amazing that winter continues to claim “IMPLY” when in this post -

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/religion/2827127/posts?page=141#141

I make it clear that it was a literal understanding PLUS two contemporary mormons taking the exact same citations by AUTHORITATIVE mormons to understand it was actual, physical sex.

Interesting too that winter ignored the post in whole to pursue her preconceived notions. Come on winter - what part of “Literal” is that hard to understand?

Who’s immature - the one who sidesteps real answers to continue a discredited bleat.

winter you are joking about the ‘intercourse” word right?
The leaders state clearly that their god had intercourse with Mary, how much more clear can it be? Do you need a sketch?

Did they use the word “intercourse”, no, but they did describe the act, you do know what the “act” is do you not?
In the Bible there are references to “known”, “have known”, “knew” all meaning intercourse, with out the “word”.

How much more clear can it be:

Apostle Bruce McConkie:
“Christ was begotten by an immortal Father in the same way that mortal men are begotten by mortal fathers.” (Mormon Doctrine, 1966, p. 547)

How much more clear can it be:

“The birth of the Saviour was as natural as are the births of our children; it was the result of natural action. He partook of flesh and blood - was begotten of his Father, as we were of our fathers.” (Journal of Discourses, vol. 8, p. 115)

How much more clear can it be:

“What does it mean to believe in Christ? It means to accept him as the Son of God in the literal and full sense of the word. It means to believe that God is his Father in the same sense that all mortal men have fathers.” (The Promised Messiah: The First Coming of Christ, p. 294)

“The Father had a Son, a natural Son, his own literal Seed, the Offspring of his body.” (The Promised Messiah: The First Coming of Christ, p. 355)

.
.
.
.
.

Even beyond that lds teach that Mary was the literal child of their god, so not only did the lds god have intercourse with Mary, it was also incest according to their own teachings.
