“Cool - so it’s not based on Biblical passages but creeds written several centuries after Jesus’ time.”

More bigotry. Very sad.

Hence why I avoid them. I usually hit the “everything” button so I usually have no idea what forum I’m going into (I never bother to look).

If it’s something I’d like to talk about, I do. But for a Religious forum, they’re pretty mean.

Not to mention your rotting body is taking up valuable space that could be better used for farming....:)

I know, but the majority of burials are just that - buried underground (complete with concrete box to enclose casket per law in many places).

I doubt what one does with the body has anything to do with future life as Jesus has promised us new bodies.

My parish priest announced that people should not ask him to preside over cremations because he won't do it.

The Priest does not have a choice. since the Church permits it. Contact your Bishop and have him straighten out this rogue.

The Catholic Church is against cremation,

Only if you are dong it to deny the Resurrection

Yeah, firewood don’t cost much up there, especialy after all the dead trees this summer.

You ain't kidding.

I lost a few small ones for sure, and there's a couple of big ones I'm worried about.

At least one of which is aimed right at the house if it falls.

A worse scenario is being *mistaken* for dead and waking up too late in the mortician’s lab...or underground.

No thanks.

If I’m cremated, I’ll actually be dead, for sure.

http://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/510874/jewish/Why-does-Jewish-law-forbid-cremation.htm

The Biblical Commandment

Man’s soul comes from Above, “He breathed into his nostrils the soul of life,”and when its earthly mission has been accomplished it rises back to G-d, returning to its source.

The body, on the other hand, was taken from the ground — “the L-rd G-d formed man of dust from the ground”— and must therefore return to the earth. This is expressed in the words that G-d tells Adam, the first man, “For dust you are, and to dust you will return.”

This concept is reiterated in Deuteronomy, where we are commanded to bury the dead: “You shall bury him on that day.” The Jerusalem Talmud explains that this requires us to bury the body in its entirety, not after it has been diminished through cremation or in any other manner: “You must bury him in entirety, not partially. From this verse we extrapolate that the command was not fulfilled if the person was partially buried.”

Cremating a body destroys most of the body, making burial of the flesh impossible, and thus violates the biblical command.

snip

Our Responsibilities Vis-à-Vis the Human Body

In Jewish law, the human body belongs to its Creator. It is merely on loan to the person, who is the guardian of the body, but he or she has no right to deface it in any way. The body must be “returned” in its entirety, just as it was given.

Additionally, Man was created in “G-d’s image and likeness.”Any violation of the human body is considered, therefore, to be a violation of G-d Himself.

This general principle and law governs many of our laws, like those prohibiting self-mutilation or tattoos, and requiring us to do our utmost to keep ourselves from danger by maintaining proper hygiene and the like. This principle applies after death, too; any mutilation of the dead is prohibited.

Sure - bigotry. Whatever floats your boat. Because a Church that sold passes to Heaven (indulgences) would NEVER invent a position where you had to be buried on sacred ground to enter Heaven - which that Church also owned. No, never!

NO.

If you want to laid to rest on a burning pyre as it floats off into the sea, then feel free.

Ashes to ashes - Dust to dust...

For me, a burial plot for family members is a place I go and “visit them”.

I know they are not there, but it makes me feel close to them. At least I have a gravestone to hug and cry over.

“I doubt what one does with the body has anything to do with future life as Jesus has promised us new bodies.”

I completely agree. We've only had one family member cremated, my sister. We went upstate to my uncles “grave site”...where their entire family members are buried.

It's a lovely cemetery. We each took turns throwing my sisters ashes off a beautiful mountain top, while her song was playing. But now, I have no place to visit.

At our Church The Funeral service at the Church and the Ceremony at the Grave doesn't cost a dime, and the Catholic Daughters (Lay Apostleate) prepares the breakfast free of charge.

You might want to get some facts before you say things like this.
