Thanks to the efforts of defenders of orthodoxy in the Church, the Gnostics were discredited and officially repudiated. They aren’t around any more, but the author says that Gnostic-like traits can be found among Protestants.
Gnostic-like tendencies in modern Protestantism include a focus on the believer’s “personal relationship with Jesus,” a relationship which supposedly doesn’t need to be intermediated by the Church and its sacraments, especially the Eucharist.
As the author points out, the idea of a special elite whose personal relationship with Christ elevates them (the elite) over the rest of humanity was also a tenet of the Gnostic heretics.
