“BillionGraves” Webinar to Highlight New Genealogy Technology [Lds obsession with the dead]
Lds.org ^ | Nov. 15, 2011

A new mobile device app called “BillionGraves,” which combines GPS location data with the pictures users take of gravestones, will be highlighted by FamilySearch presenter Tim Cross at this month’s Utah Genealogical Association webinar on Thursday, November 17, at 7:00 p.m. mountain standard time.

Those interested may watch the live webinar—a virtual meeting broadcast on the Internet—free of charge at the UGA website. After the presentation is over, a UGA membership is required to access the recording.

The BillionGraves app, which is available free of charge on Google Android and Apple iOS devices, enables users to upload photos of headstones they take with their phones to an online database, where they are mapped, transcribed, and linked to FamilySearch.

“This app helps everyone identify where his or her ancestors are buried,” said Tim Cross, product manager for FamilySearch and presenter for the webinar. “A trip to the cemetery won’t be the same.”

The photographing and transcribing effort, performed by volunteers, has already generated 250,000 headstone transcriptions in six months, Brother Cross said, making family history more accessible to researchers whose ancestors' graves and names were previously inaccessible.

I recently told a friend I wanted to be cremated and my ashes compressed into golf balls so my loved ones could take one last whack at me and send my remains into the ocean as fish food.

Then a friend suggested I consider Eternal Reefs and I wuz like “Hell Yeah!”

My two baby boys are buried at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Oakland and I think I would find it comforting to be able to zero in on their little graves. I’m sure members of the LDS Church, as well as non members, will benefit from this free service. I think it is stupendous.

It is perplexing that you take this opportunity to turn it into yet another anti Mormon thread.

Whatever floats your boat.

I had the idea - even before I joined the LDS Church - to start a club of sorts where a family in one part of the world who had a family member or friend who was buried in another part of the world partner up with a family in that other part of the world where THEIR loved one was buried. Sheeesh. That was hard to say. Anyway, I wish someone in Oakland could visit my babies’ graves to make sure they are well kept and place flowers once in a while and take a picture for me. And I would be willing to do the same for someone whose loved one is buried in Fresno. Whew!

Do mormons have a history of trying to cheat others in this way?

I know not about others; but colorless reptiles seem to have an affinity for MORMON leadership...

No problem, Ma'am; as we are out 6 days a week, distibuting the TRUTH to who(m?)ever will listen.

My two baby boys are buried at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Oakland and I think I would find it comforting to be able to zero in on their little graves.

Saundra, I'm sorry you had to suffer this in your life. It must have been difficult to go through.

"Lord Living God of the Ages, the God who has always been God and always will be the Only God of all universes, I pray for Saundra...for you to continue to heal any emotional scars from that time in your life...any "what ifs" that may have wandered through her mind...comfort her with the comfort of Your Holy Spirit..."

"And if she has never had 100% peace over that part of her life, provide it for her now with a peace that transcends all understanding."

"Give her that personal hope of being reconciled with her little ones again. Give her the grace to simply receive heaven as a 100% gift -- no "to do list" conditions. More importantly, give us all that assurance of salvation NOW due to what Jesus Christ has ALREADY accomplished for us...so that we WILL be reconciled with the Father forever no matter what church membership we hold."

"Bring us to that devoted commitment to Your Son Jesus, so that we have eternal life now & forever. In Him we pray."

Saundra the Lord doesn't always respond to my prayers right away. This time He did.

He reminded me to share this verse with you. His personal promise to you from His Word, spoken through His spokesperson, David, after David lost his infant son:

22 He answered, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept. I thought, ‘Who knows? The LORD may be gracious to me and let the child live.’ 23 But now that he is dead, why should I go on fasting? Can I bring him back again? I WILL GO TO HIM, but he will not return to me.” (2 Samuel 12:22-23)

Saundra, these boys performed no checklist of spiritual duties. They were never members of the Mormon church. They were never ordained priests of any kind. They never entered a Mormon temple. Alas, they never married.

Yet, what overwhelming grace and mercy is at the heart of our Lord. Perfect beings don't die, Saundra. They died because they inherited the same "wretched body of death" we all do (Romans 7:24). We all die. In our Lord Jesus who has always been divine, we live.

May His life be celebrated in us all; and may 2 Samuel 12:22-23 be the hope that rests in you for your sons...Don't place your hope in a ritualistic proxy ceremony that happened in some Mormon temple for your sons; place your hope in the proxy death on the cross that occurred on behalf of your sons -- and for you and me.

I'm not "into" grave decorating myself but it sounds like it could work for people who are.

I’m thinking about specifying in my will that my remains are to be cremated and that the ashes are then to be flung into the face of Jimmy Carter.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have lost two grandsons/babies myself and know that pain.
I am not sure what you mean zero in on their graves, as you know where their little bodies are..

J. Vernon McGee said that this earth is one big graveyard.

The new earth and heavens of Jesus will NOT be a graveyard.

But the mormon mythology would have countless new little gods creating countless new GRAVEYARD earths.

False, false, false.

I hope it’s true.

I just looked up his name, but couldn’t find a link for his retraction.

Could you post it?

Looking for it now. I remember reading that it happened about two years ago. I am not finding much about the guy dating after about 2002.
His earlier writings make me really doubt he was a Baptist anything.
His support of mormonISM is really convoluted and circular.
