Report: Ultra-Orthodox [Jews] Spitting at Christian Clergy in Jerusalem
The Deacon's Bench ^ | 11/4/11 | Deacon Greg Kandra

Posted on 11/04/2011 7:56:36 PM PDT by marshmallow

Details, from a Jewish paper in Israel:

Ultra-Orthodox young men curse and spit at Christian clergymen in the streets of Jerusalem’s Old City as a matter of routine. In most cases the clergymen ignore the attacks, but sometimes they strike back. Last week the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court quashed the indictment against an Armenian priesthood student who had punched the man who spat at him.

Johannes Martarsian was walking in the Old City in May 2008 when an young ultra-Orthodox Jew spat at him. Maratersian punched the spitter in the face, making him bleed, and was charged for assault. But Judge Dov Pollock, who unexpectedly annulled the indictment, wrote in his verdict that “putting the defendant on trial for a single blow at a man who spat at his face, after suffering the degradation of being spat on for years while walking around in his church robes is a fundamental contravention of the principles of justice and decency.”

“Needless to say, spitting toward the defendant when he was wearing the robe is a criminal offense,” the judge said.

When Narek Garabedian came to Israel to study in the Armenian Seminary in Jerusalem half a year ago, he did not expect the insults, curses and spitting he would be subjected to daily by ultra-Orthodox Jews in the streets of the Old City.

“When I see an ultra-Orthodox man coming toward me in the street, I always ask myself if he will spit at me,” says Narek, a Canadian Armenian, this week. About a month ago, on his way to buy groceries in the Old City, two ultra-Orthodox men spat at him. The spittle did not fall at his feet but on his person. Narek, a former football player, decided this time not to turn the other.....

he would promise to not think of all Christians as Catholics

Pretty funny line, considering that Pope Pius XII saved 860,000 Jewish lives -- according to a Israeli Jewish rabbi & diplomat, Pinchas Lapide.

BTW, the Spanish Inquisition, which had no authority over any Jews but only Catholics, had a total death toll under 10,000, over 300 years.

Oh, BTW: the German belt buckles said "Gott mit Uns" (God with us), and the motto dated from the Prussian army, not only before the Nazi era, but before Germany per se even existed.

Prussia, BTW, was an ardently Lutheran kingdom, not Catholic at all.

Another view:

...An estimated 31,912 heretics were burned at the stake, 17,659 were burned in effigy and 291,450 made reconciliations in the Spanish Inquisition...

And the Crusade killed as many Europeans as it did Jews. But from the Jewish perspective, the Crusade killed many Jews period. They really don’t care what the Europeans did to the Europeans, it is what they have come to expect anyway.

So this offense caused by violent encounters with those who profess Christ is the reason it is the way it is in Jerusalem. Note that it is in one neighborhood, the Mea Sharim that it is this way, that is where this sect of rabid-rabinicals are. And unfortunately you to run into them about the city now and then. Mostly they keep to themselves. All the rest of Israel is great, I loved living there. Once you get to really know the Jews, and they learn to trust you, you see a people that are simply wonderful.

Unlike the Muslims, they seem wonderful till you get to know them, or get dead.

Now if you were in their shoes, and one pope saved many thousands of lives, and another burned a partly 100 of your family members at the stake, would you trust Christians?

I wouldn't.

I just thought a bit of context from the Israeli perspective might help. And to keep other confusion from happening, I am not Israeli, and don't have a drop of Jewish blood in me that I am aware of. My family came to the US from England before there was a US. I am American and no longer live in Israel.

I had enough of the daily terrorism, kinda wears on you after a few years.

Boy howdy, did she pick the wrong sect of Judaism. Guess what, her Rabbi’s are the same guys this story is about.

Now I know a Rabbi that clearly stated that Jesus was most likely the Messiah ben Joseph who was prophcied to come for the gentiles. He is waiting for Messiah ben David who is coming for the Jews.

Kinda knows his Bible rather well, I think. Those Anti-Christian types are clueless when it comes to the Tanach, but know the commentarys of their sect like the back of their hands. I think that is called a cult.

You could get a Ph.D. in Theology arguing that one, either pro or con.

Indeed, that is one long involved argument with no end. A certain preacher said stay away from useless arguments that cause divisions, but rather put on humility, love and a contrite spirit. He is a respected teacher, who wrote a few books in the compilation we call the Bible. Not only that, but the argument goes beyond the Christian realm. Schma Israel, Adoni Elehenu, Adoni Echad. I have heard that the Schma itself is a definitive statement to settle this very issue. (Hear O Israel, the Lord your God, the Lord is one...) In other words, God, the Messiah and the Spirit are One. But the Rabids don't hear it that way. They hear that God is one, so how can He be three? Ironic... Those who will not see, cannot see.

But spitting toward him if he were wearing jeans and a polo shirt wouldn't be a criminal offense?

No because it would not be a legally defined "hate crime".

Anyhow, some people are just trash, and punching one in the nose is certainly a natural response.

It seems the Judge agreed with you.

Yes, Once in 10 years, and I was the one spat upon. And no, I did not punch the guy in the face. We settled it properly. We ended up as friends.

and their usual target is NOT Christians, but Jews who drive on Shabbat.

Completely true, and might I add that the ones they target are the ones who drive through thier closed off neighborhood on Shabbat. They put up road fences to keep people from driving in by accident. In real life, you gotta really go out of your way to have a problem with any Jews in all of Jerusalem. You just have to wander into the Arab section to have problems, day or night.

Jews who remained Jews weren’t subject to the Inquisition. They were subject to deportation.

Deportation procedings:

Might I as a question? If you were Spanish, and you became a Catholic, are you now Italian? What does a Jew become if he becomes a Catholic? As in a Catholic _ _ _. As a Jewish child are you no longer offended if your parents were burned at the stake because they turned out to be secret Jews?

What part of this logic excuses the Catholics from burning the Jews at the stake in the eyes of the ones that got away!

Thanks, was shooting from the hip. Hip is ok, memory not as good... -grin-

And I am not trying to turn this into a Catholic bashing thread. As it says, ALL have fallen short of the Glory of God. All mens works are as filthy rags before Him.

First, Jews are bad because they are modernist and progressive. Then Jews are bad because they're backwards fundies who still live in the middle ages.

I'm becoming confused here.

In the mid ‘90s my wife and I, on vacation, attended a Messianic service in Jerusalem. As the congregation exited, a group of about 8-10 young Orthodox Jews descended on the group. We were spared because we don’t look Jewish, but they were all over our fellow parishioner who is of southern Italian heritage. Jerks.

Hint to Orthodox Israeli fundies: Wake up, a$$holes - cut out the “Yoshkie” krap. You need all the friends you can get.

Unlike non-Jewish chr*stians, Jewish chr*stians are heretical Jews and are very much resented by trues who observe the Holy Torah.

Nice to see that the Jewish courts sided with the christian isn’t it?

Israeli courts are Jewish only ethnically. Like in the US, they are radically secular. A genuine Halakhic court would have handed down a decision you probably wouldn't like.

What do we say, on this forum, of hippies who spit on veterans?

Last time I checked, that sort of misconduct bordered on unforgivable ...

You realize, I hope, that in a genuinely Halakhic government of Israel practitioners of other religions would not be allowed to live there? Non-Jews could live there (gerei-toshav) and even idolators would be allowed to visit there (providing they didn't engage in any idolatry while there), but not to live there.

'Eretz Yisra'el is the "sacristy" of the earth. Only the priestly nation is allowed there.
