Ultra-Orthodox young men curse and spit at Christian clergymen in the streets of Jerusalem’s Old City as a matter of routine. In most cases the clergymen ignore the attacks, but sometimes they strike back. Last week the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court quashed the indictment against an Armenian priesthood student who had punched the man who spat at him.
Johannes Martarsian was walking in the Old City in May 2008 when an young ultra-Orthodox Jew spat at him. Maratersian punched the spitter in the face, making him bleed, and was charged for assault. But Judge Dov Pollock, who unexpectedly annulled the indictment, wrote in his verdict that “putting the defendant on trial for a single blow at a man who spat at his face, after suffering the degradation of being spat on for years while walking around in his church robes is a fundamental contravention of the principles of justice and decency.”
“Needless to say, spitting toward the defendant when he was wearing the robe is a criminal offense,” the judge said.
When Narek Garabedian came to Israel to study in the Armenian Seminary in Jerusalem half a year ago, he did not expect the insults, curses and spitting he would be subjected to daily by ultra-Orthodox Jews in the streets of the Old City.
“When I see an ultra-Orthodox man coming toward me in the street, I always ask myself if he will spit at me,” says Narek, a Canadian Armenian, this week. About a month ago, on his way to buy groceries in the Old City, two ultra-Orthodox men spat at him. The spittle did not fall at his feet but on his person. Just like all other groups, some Jews are bigots. I’m always glad when an aggressive bigot takes one in the nose.
In the mid ‘90s my wife and I, on vacation, attended a Messianic service in Jerusalem. As the congregation exited, a group of about 8-10 young Orthodox Jews descended on the group. We were spared because we don’t look Jewish, but they were all over our fellow parishioner who is of southern Italian heritage. Jerks.

You could get a Ph.D. in Theology arguing that one, either pro or con.
A lady here in NYC who was Catholic and converted to Orthodox Judaism told me the day of her conversion she had to stand naked in front on 3 rabbis and they poured water over her naked body and did not allow her to dry. Then she had to spit on the Bible and blaspheme Jesus in a disgusting ceremony. Then she was accepted into the Jewish faith. This is someone I know for years and would not lie.
Not true. Christians believe in only one God. Indeed, that is the opening line of the Creed recited at the Mass: "I believe in one God…" The question of the Trinity is of the nature of God, not the number of gods. You could argue that it is false but you cannot argue that Christians believe in three gods.
Exactly, even those of us who aren't Catholic, Orthodox or Protestant still have this in common with all the others. We are monotheists just like the Jews. The Trinity deals with the nature of God, it explicitly states that God is One God and not many.
The Creed didn’t come about until way more than 200 years of fistfights. Tell me, how do you think non-Christians read this, the CENTRAL mystery of our Christian faith:
Contemporary Catholic: “I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son ...”
Latin (ca. A.D. 700): “Credo in Deum Patrem omnipotentem; Creatorem coeli et terrae. Et in Jesum Christum, Filium ejus unicum ...”
Anglican: “I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord ...”
The Trinity is not casually called the “central mystery of our faith” lightly. Oh, yeah, and our (small-”c”) christian friends, the Mormons, come right out and say there are three, not one.
This has been happening regularly for years. It is hushed up but reports filter out occasionally and have been discussed here on FR previously. One possible explanation for why this happens is because the spitters are evil, hateful bigots. I'm not certain what the other possible explanations are.
How is it “Jew bashing” to post and discuss this article?
Are Jews to be considered to have no one who does wrong among them?
And you mention that the phenomenon has been previously reported. Yet some on the thread have expressed surprise.
If you believe the stories to be false then say so.
But spitting toward him if he were wearing jeans and a polo shirt wouldn't be a criminal offense?
Anyhow, some people are just trash, and punching one in the nose is certainly a natural response.

It’s pretty clear since Jesus Christ was a man who actually lived, whom God sent to live. It falls under Creation.
Jews who remained Jews weren’t subject to the Inquisition. They were subject to deportation. That’s why the Sephardi Jews are, or at least were, spread out all over the Middle East.

Did you know that the Nazi guards wore belt buckles with in god we trust on them? Sang Christmas carols outside the gas chambers as they gassed jews and threw christmas wreaths on the piles of the dead? Yeah it was a ploy to build a divide between the Jews and Christians by the enemy, and it worked.
You also should understand the difference between Eastern and Western Christianity. The Orthodox sects such as Syrian Orthodox, Greek Orthodox and the Lebanese Marointes tend to be very anti-semetic and pro-palestinian. It is only the recent years when the Jews experienced a new flavor of Christianity that actually loves them via tourism, that some of their eyes were opened to the fact that not all Christians are alike.
But then, on the Christian side, the same thing is true. Christians tend to think of Jews as this homogeneous group of people, when, just like Christianity they come in all flavors. The ultra-orthodox flavor tends to be a sour one. But on the other hand, the Sheersonite sect of Hasidim happen to be, well, pretty darn cool. They, to the untrained eye, are identical on the street. The spitters and the lovers. It is their actions that set them apart rather than the title "Ultra-Orthodox".
I had a conversation one day on Ben Yehuda street in Jerusalem, where the Jewish guy I was chatting with and I discovered this difference between us, and he said to me that if I would promise to not think of all Jews as alike, he would promise to not think of all Christians as Catholics. We both made a friend that day.
Jews tend to be pragmatic, comes from 2000 years of persecution. Your actions speak louder than your words to them. So when you say you are a Christian and make rude comments like "Read some history." for openers, you lost your credibility right there.
You know, the old, “they shall know you by your love line”? Its true! They shall also know you by your lack thereof naturally.
Plus with the upcoming updated English/Latin changes to the Roman Catholic Church mass worship in the next few weeks, the wording for the Nicene Creed will be going from “We believe” to “I believe” in one God, which will work to help make Christian/Catholic faith stronger.
