I think I’d like the idea of purgatory...if it was scriptural. It isn’t. I do not see the Almighty as being a very nice person in that regard anyway. At least not the one I see in the OT.

"What the Church means by Purgatory"

Take a look around, I think we are already there.

I expect to become an expert on Purgatory in 10 or 20 years ... or it could happen tomorrow.

>> On the other hand, I think it’s confusing to refer to this cooperation with and submission to God’s Grace as simply “faith alone” – which is one reason Catholics don’t refer to it that way<<

James 2:24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

John 6:28-29 “Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.”

Dartuser,

Let me know if you have questions. I, or someone else on this thread should be able to answer.

This is why I quit the ping list for Catholics. We are to walk, hand in hand, to God with other Christians. Putting up with the angry back and forth about who said what and which religion is best, and how the Catholic Religion is superior is all bs to me.

Having said that, I kissed the ring of Pope John Paul II in 1987, I have been a Catholic my whole life, and have had much trouble going to church knowing that the Catholics for the most part vote hard-line Democrat regardless of abortion and their tendency to love to control the individual. I went to my Roman Catholic priest and wanted to talk about my apprehensions and do you know what he told me? He said, that it is not a good idea to bring up abortion since everyone has such different views and the church is about inclusion. He is straight from Poland and told me that when Communism fell, it was a very difficult time because his uncles and parents were afraid that they would have to go out to look for a job. He also said that Solidarity was unions, and we have a duty to stand with unionization. The priests before him weren’t much better.

Now, I believe I am a good Catholic. I believe in Jesus Christ, the son of God, the whole apostles creed. But this bickering and stuff is bs and the Catholics in America are mostly brainwashed with unionism, this uncanny ability to be ultra-liberal under the guise of compassion, and extremely uninformed.

You should stop the bickering if you post the threads with simple words of, “I am with you, brother.”

Purgatory

This concept denies the efficacy of the salvific
death and resurrection of Yah'shua.

It certainly grieves the Holy Spirit to suggest
that Yah'shua death was of no value.

Seek YHvH in His WORD.

From the article:
“But that’s a misunderstanding of what the Catholic Church actually teaches.”

It has been pointed out, repeatedly, to the Catholic Church for about 500 years that the chosen term readily leads to misunderstanding. Notwithstanding, the term still stands, is defended vociferously, and all naysayers castigated as ... well, you know. The bottom line is that the term purgatory will still be defended stoutly, and pressed upon people even though it, at very best, conveys the sense of the Bible’s teaching in only the most strained, derived, and heavily footnoted way possible. Mistakes cannot be admitted by the magisterium. They must be defended at all costs. For nothing less than infallibility is at stake, an attribute that properly belongs to God alone ... but never mind.

Luke ch 18 v9Then Jesus told this story to some who had great self-confidence and scorned everyone else: 10“Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a dishonest tax collector. 11The proud Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not a sinner like everyone else, especially like that tax collector over there! For I never cheat, I don’t sin, I don’t commit adultery, 12I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.’ 13“But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even 'lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’ 14I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For the proud will be humbled, but the humble will be honored.

Which brings us back too this

Jhn 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

A plan of salvation for all who believe and follow. No money can buy it, no deeds can earn it, only ask in earnest for salvation through Jesus Christ and you will receive. God's plan of salvation was made so simple a child can understand the terms. Man's never ending added conditions to obtain GOD's Mercy and salvation is as old as Israel itself. It has been the nature of man and of church leaders {all of the denominations} throughout the ages too try and burden the believers with doctrines and laws they themselves can't even follow.

Praise GOD our salvation comes through the cleansing, purifying, and sanctifying blood of Christ alone. The Blood Of The Lamb Of GOD which removes entirely without lingering residue mans sin and because of this we are not dependent on mans folly.

I purchased the entire set of tapes in this series about 3 weeks ago and have watched them all. It is an excellent series, and I recommend them to any who are interested in Catholicism, who just want to understand what we believe, or who are muddled in some aspects of their faith.

I just watched the last tape which included a discussion of Purgatory, and it was excellent as well.

Another thing this series does is give a picture of the wide sweep of the Church throughout both time and geography. I cannot tell you how pleased I am with this set. I actually think it would be a great teaching aid to RCIA classes.

Here is a recent prophesy on purgatory:

Purgatory is not a place you should feel content to enter

Excerpt:

The existence of Purgatory

The existence of Purgatory is misunderstood. Many believe that it is simply a waiting period of purification before souls can enter Heaven for those souls who may not have been in a state of grace at the time of death. There are different levels in Purgatory children and all souls feel a burning pain of darkness which intensifies the further down the level. This means that souls who narrowly missed being cast into Hell suffer the pain of burning the most. Although all souls in Purgatory will eventually enter My Father’s Kingdom it is not a place where My children should feel content to enter. This is why you must fight sin and seek forgiveness as regularly as possible to remain in a state of grace. This is why you must obey the Ten Commandments at all times. This is why you must also pray for those souls who are there because without your prayers they cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven until the final Day of Judgement.

It is time now to face the truth children.

After reading this thread, these two recent prophesies are applicable also:

Message for America embrace your brothers and sisters of all denominations

Excerpt:

You My precious children are lost. You have been shown so much confusion and presented with twisted truths about the existence of God the Father. You use religion as a façade to wreak venom on those more unfortunate than you. It is time to accept the truth that it will only be through your love of neighbour that as a nation you can return into the arms of your Creator God the Father.

And:

The Warning is a form of global confession

Excerpt:

The prayers of My devoted army are already mitigating global disasters and the departure of My Holy Vicar from the Vatican. Their obedience in reciting My Divine Mercy chaplet is saving souls right now.

My daughter make sure that all My children understand that I speak to all religions and denominations through these messages. I exclude no one. For they are all children of God. There is only one God and that is My Eternal Father, God of the Most High.

Come together with Me children and let us work as one to save My souls all over the world quickly. By prayer alone you can help Me save the world.

Luke 16:19-32
19 “There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day. 20 But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, 21 desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

24 “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. 26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’

27 “Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, 28 for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ 29 Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’

**********************************************************

25 But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented.

1. They were judged by what they did in their lifetime.

“And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us”

2. Rich man’s status could never be changed. No prayer or anything would change that

“31 But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.”

3. Again, nothing will change them, if they did not listen while on earth nothing can be done for them

Matt 12:36-37 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

4. You will be judged by your words not prayers of others and no prayer of anyone will ever override this.

I count long Masses with overly elaborate musically rendered versions of The Gloria as Purgatory. There are definitely parish music directors in Purgatory - my purgatory is to listen to them and their purgatory is to take lessons from the angels until all the over-embellishment is worked out of their systems.
