I don't think it is so much a haphazard way of translating, as if they were trying to dumb it down, but, as you admit, some things worded in Greek do not get to the depth in English. What I really think is all that comes when we "meditate" on God's word, let it sink in, and relate it to the whole story to discover the richness and meaning God intended for us to know. It is definitely NOT for the idle curiosity seeker.

In this case, though, I meant by “your guys” the translators. If I’d known which version I might have said, say, “the NIV guys,” (as opposed to the team of Wookies our bishops got to do their version.)
It’s a problem when people don’t understand and know it. It’s a bad problem when they don’t understand and think they do.
