Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.
But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.
When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress, said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.
But someone said to me, Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harborthis might be a news story.
Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.
But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.
I just felt it was ritual and dogma, Ellison said. Of course, thats not the reality of Catholicism, but its the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.
It wasnt until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, looking for other things.

All hospital related chaplains get a list daily who is of their faith and go directly to them. All private ministers - the patients own minister - goes in like any family member unless it’s critical care - then they check in with the clerk at the front desk in the main lobby - as only a limited amount of people are allowed in that section and the family makes sure he is accommodated with an opening to the patient.
as well. You really don't do yourselves any favors by complaining about Anti-Catholic bigotry because bigotry can go both ways. It means "a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices, especially one exhibiting intolerance, and animosity toward those of differing beliefs" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bigotry). Fits some of you guys, too, doesn't it?
Not only critical care. See what I mean? It would take forever to teach you anything.
Think of the how various congregations of the church would copy and pass on important letters like those from Paul.
What the monks did do was make the hugely elaborate copies for churches and their own libraries, not of much use to the average person.
Seems to me Jobs associates said similar to him as they attempted to offer their counsel...and we know how that ended. Elihu:...."I too will have my say, I too will tell what I know...for I am full of words.....Inside I am like bottled up wine, like new wineskins ready to burst...I must speak and find relief...I must open my lips and reply." "Listen to my words...pay attention to everything I say....I am about to open my mouth...my words are on the tip of my tongue..." Job 32 and 33.
Sorry, my reply got cut off. I wanted to say that it is not Catholics that start these mammoth arguments on the open threads. It is mostly inflammatory remarks from a few anti-Catholic posters who get them going. When Catholics try to answer a question we get told that we use a daffyntionary or some such, or that it’s not Biblical, and when we answer those stupid arguments, there’s a dogpile. The open threads are all a mess, and I’m particularly tired of some specific statements that some of you repeat ad nauseum.
You may not have recently fallen off a turnip truck, but there appear to be hay seeds in your hair.
You know, have your “special” threads, but drop trying to make the Religion Forum a Catholics Only place. We have every right to post our thoughts and every right to defend against false claims, false doctrine and any other misunderstandings of the Christian faith. It is OUR faith,
You certainly have your rights, but it appears clear that EVERYTHING CATHOLIC IS “False claims, false doctrine, and other misunderstandings of the Christian faith.” We disagree. You will not permit that, without attempting to draw blood, it appears. You will not allow Catholics to have our faith without pushing yours in our faces. All in Christ’s Holy Name, of course.
The remarks of non-Catholics and anti-Catholics on Caucus threads are often very offensive, and you all appear proud of that, as though you were being nailed to a cross for deliberately violating RF rules.
I NEVER said anything OFFENSE! I was interested in the article - whatever it was at the time - a few years back - and immediately attacked. Many experienced the same thing so don’t try to whitewash it. Another freeper experienced it the same time as I did and then we freeped - laughing ourselves silly at the reaction of Catholics about Christians accidentally going on their ‘closed door’ thread. It’s still funny to me because catholicism has nothing any Christian wants! Keep the door locked and shades pulled. Just by the reaction alone - who needs such venom! “ Can’t you read? What’s wrong with you? We are reporting you!!” LOL! Long after we left the thread. Way too funny.
And the ‘victim’ mentality is solely a catholic trait!! That’s WIDELY KNOWN - one reason they need a ‘caucus’! And they are STILL whining! LOL!!
I’m not going to whitewash anything. If you aren’t Catholic, stay off the Catholic Caucus threads. You are not invited. Any doubts, check with the RM. If your skin is too thin to understand that non-Catholics are NOT WELCOME on Catholic Caucus threads, then you are too immature for the Religion Forum.
You sound like you are nourishing your own little victim mentality there, poor thing.
I have tried about ten times on this thread to get the discussion back to the very important subject of a Nation of Islam Muslim serving in the United States Congress right now! Not having much luck because it seems the Saturday nite at the CvP Warzone has been extended. I get tired of the same arguments, too. What do you suggest we do about it?
LOL! I’m blessed blessed blessed! I’m blessed going in and blessed going out! I’m blessed with eternal life. It grates on the anti Word crowd but that’s the price of not believing..
GOD’S WORD is The Final Authority! Good night!
I said, "It is our faith, too.", I was not saying it was exclusive. I hope that was not your intention to misconstrue what I said. I, for the record, do NOT "draw blood" and I have never tried to push my faith into your face and I am more than happy to hear opposing views and discuss them respectfully. I have received quite a bit of that unkind of behavior but I don't do tit-for-tat. I have many times stated where I agree with Catholicism. So you may have someone else in mind with this one-size-fits-all diatribe.
I really do hope you have a great Labor Day!
I’m open to suggestion.
Thanks. My mom just had her 80th bitrthday party, and there was a huge reunion over the weekend, and big bbq today. It was great!.
Tomorrow, have to do laundry. Otherwise, it should be nice.
PS, I certainly did have someone else in mind.
